If the film is a success, Mortal Kombat producers want to make a Liu Kang and Kung Lao spinoff
GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – The new Mortal Kombat movie will hit theaters and on HBO Max on April 16. This film is an adaptation of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary.
Todd Garner, producer of the upcoming cinematic reboot of Mortal Kombat, has hopes that the film will be a success and be the start of a new film franchise. In an interview attended by CBR, Garner leaked some of his dream projects in hopes of following the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
“I wanted to make a nine-hour series like WandaVision (MCU) for things like monks, Liu Kang and Kung Lao. There’s so much that can be taken to make a film,” Garner said.
Regarding his latest film, Todd Garner claims that the film can be enjoyed by loyal fans of the Mortal Kombat game and those who are new to the Mortal Kombat franchise.
“You can go in and sit down and not know what Mortal Kombat is and enjoy it and love it, just like anyone who’s played this game for 30 years, and knows everything about everything,” Garner said.
“Our goal and our prayers are for this film to do well enough and be satisfying enough for fans and everyone else, so that we can sit down with the Warner Bros. executives, make plans like Kevin Feige (MCU producer) did and chart out of nature. universe for many years!”
Garner himself admitted to being a big fan of Mortal Kombat, with Liu Kang and Kung Lao as his favorite heroes. Garner also has hopes of making a spinoff of a character like Kabal, while stating he would be “love” to make a ninja-centric solo film.
Garner also wants to make a war film following Jax and Sonja Blade as part of a potential Mortal Kombat cinematic universe.
Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan and Todd Garner, Mortal Kombat will also star Joe Taslim as Bi-Han aka Sub-Zero. The film also stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young and Laura Brent as Allison Young.
