Heart Rate Based Study: Mario Kart Game Most Stressful!

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – The game is actually created to make the players relax. However, it turns out that not all games managed to stretch the nerves of the players. Some games actually add to the stress level of the players. A study conducted by BonusFinder examined which games stressed players out. In collaboration with sports scientists, the BonusFinder team commissioned 14 competitive gamers to play 16 of the most popular and challenging games, to find out which games cause the most stress while playing.

“We looked for 14 gamers who stated they played at least 15 hours per week, and were familiar with the titles on the research list. Every gamer wears a heart rate monitor that tracks their heart rate over time and enables data collection via mass export,” the research team said of the research method.

The results are surprising! Quoted by.ID from Invision Community, the results of the study found Mario Kart as the most stressful game to play. With heart rate increasing by an average of 21 BPM over a 30-minute gaming session (32.81 percent increase over rest ratio), playing Mario Kart was physically more tiring than any of the other games tested. The equivalent of doing light exercise, this study shows how competitive gamers are when trying to win those races.

Even playing Mario Kart was noted to increase the average heart rate during a playing session, compared to FIFA 20, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Dark Souls III and Fortnite.

“We measured resting heart rates for baseline comparisons and recorded heart rates at 10-second intervals for each player. The data is averaged from all participants who played each game to ensure there are no outliers or anomalies that interfere with the results. Although we had multiple peaks in heart rate, for the purposes of this study, we took the highest peak of each participant per game, then averaged over the total number of participants (14) to get our final figure.”

In addition to testing heart rate as an indicator of increased stress, the researchers also measured which games produced the most adrenaline-inducing moments overall. Researchers also increase the fun of playing by applying elimination rounds to the final round.

Data shows Dark Souls III is rated as the most adrenaline-inducing game, with a massive heart rate spike of up to 127 BPM during the boss fight with Darkeater Midir. Fall Guys took second place, with heart rates rising to as high as 125 BPM when competitors reached the final round and nearly won. While Mario Kart is in third position with a jump of 111.

Meanwhile, the study also found that games like Animal Crossing, The Sims, and Skyrim all lowered participants’ heart rates by an average of 5 percent over a 30-minute session. This result is in line with their popularity as a “stress relief” game.
