Google Meet Adds Filters - Interesting Filters, Here's How To Use It

In the past year, Google has focused on optimizing services for the company’s video calling market share. This is a form of their seriousness to make Google Meet able to compete with Zoom. Even so, Google did not forget the market share of private users. Now they are reported to have made an update by adding a series of interesting effects, such as filters and masks.

When making a Meet video call via an Android or iOS device, users simply tap on the sparkle in the lower-right corner of the video feed. Then on full screen view the user can swipe up on the “Effects” sheet. As in corporate and education accounts, users will get two Blur options and various Backgrounds.

Google Meet now adds “Styles” like B&W and lens flares, as well as “Filters” to turn your face into a Cat, Dog, Purple Elephant, and many other characters. Users can swipe endlessly on the bottom carousel or choose from new categories that allow users to quickly jump to a section.

The interesting effects offered are very similar to Google Duo, which until now has not made any significant updates. In fact, many of the filters are identical between the two Google calling apps. Previously in a 9toGoogle report in August, it was stated that Google was planning to replace Duo with Meet. The addition of these interesting features is likely a step in that direction.

Meet also comes as “unlimited” video calling for free Gmail accounts ending in June. In the previous update they made security improvements for education users. “Video lock” will allow hosts to shut down everyone’s video feeds immediately to “quickly prevent interruptions.” Meet will also have the option to force workspeed participants back to the main call.

Finally, teachers will be able to mute and end meetings for everyone, as well as access other security controls, from a mobile device. This capability is already available on iOS and will be coming to Android “in a few months.” Meet in Classroom integration will make all teachers a host by default because students have to sit in the waiting room if the organizer hasn’t joined yet. Multiple host support is also available for all call types. Google also credits the update for raising hands so “teachers can more easily see and hear who raised their hand”.

An upcoming premium feature for Education Plus Google Workspace or Teaching and Learning users is live subtitles. This will allow users to listen to one language and read another in real-time.

Of course this feature will be very helpful in multilingual classrooms and when meeting with parents who speak different languages. Google Meet live streaming, will also support closed captioning soon and can be published via YouTube soon. This feature was previously limited to internal domains, but the “it will basically return a “Hangouts Broadcast” feature. Google is currently targeting it for school events and board meetings.
