Focus on Developing Battlefield 6, EA Postpones New Game Need for Speed

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Electronic Arts has delayed the release of the new Need for Speed game by a year, after moving developer Criterion Games to support development of Battlefield 6. EA studio head Laura Miele said Criterion is still working on the new Need for Speed game, which is now scheduled for release in March 2023.

Later, the new NFS game will be released in multi-platform for the current console (PS5 and Xbox Series) and the last generation (PS4 and Xbox One). Miele said after EA succeeded in acquiring Codemasters (developers of Dirt, F1, and Grid) in the future the company could release racing games every year, so there was no need to rush to release the next Need for Speed game.

This transfer of resources allows EA to focus on developing Battlefield 6 which is slated for release in the 2021 holiday season. Miele also confirmed that EA Digital Illusions (DICE) Los Angeles, overseen by Respawn boss Vince Zampella, is also working on Battlefield 6.

“We’re going to put all the resources we have on this (Battlefield 6). They’ve been doing it for over a year, and some of the things they’ve been working on are simply incredible,” Miele told Polygon.

He declined to comment on rumors that Battlefield 6 will feature a modern setting and map that supports 128 players. Previously, in February 2021 EA handed development work on Need for Speed back to Criterion Games as it plans to restructure Ghost Games, which made the last four NFS entries.

Guildford, UK-based Criterion is best known for the Burnout series and has also developed two previous Need for Speed games: Hot Pursuit 2010 and Most Wanted 2012. They also contributed to Need for Speed Rivals 2021 and most recently to Star Wars Battlefront II and Battlefield V developed by DICE.

EA said in February that DICE was “much ahead of schedule” with Battlefield 6 development, and was optimistic about launching the game this spring.

“(Battlefield) are in good form, the team have worked really hard, they worked hard last year and yes, we have been working from home. Of course it’s hard to make games from home, and the team (EA DICE) is a little tired. We have a great game and some great potential with this game. We play to win. We will launch great Battlefield game to the market. “
