Esports is not yet included in the SKN Law, this is the explanation from the Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports
The development of esports in Indonesia has progressed rapidly. In fact, several times, Indonesian athletes in electronic sports have succeeded in making the nation proud.
But in reality, until now esports has not yet been included in the National Sports System Law (SKN). In other words, esports in Indonesia has not been fully recognized by the government, especially the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) which directly oversees this branch.
Whereas on the other hand, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, on several occasions has shown his support for the development of esports in Indonesia until the presence of a major tournament titled the President’s Esports Cup.
So, is esports in Indonesia still illegal?
Gatot S Dewa Broto, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, explained this through a press conference for the 2021 Free Fire Champions Cup (FFCC) which was held at the Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, on Monday (10/2/2021).
“Initially, we would issue a Minister of Youth and Sports Regulation ahead of the 2021 SEA Games because esports was also being competed. However, after going through several considerations and considering that we will revise the SKN Law, we will immediately make it into the form of a law,” said Gatot.
“Until this moment in the SKN Law, there is nothing that concerns esports. But that doesn’t mean esports is illegal. Just like the ITE Law that didn’t exist before, but it doesn’t make social media illegal.”
“Laws are generally left behind or left behind. Now we are far behind and will soon revise the law to include esports and also sports tourism,” he said.
