Esports is Increasingly Interested Even in the Midst of a Pandemic

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, almost all sports have been affected. As a result, various major tournaments had to be temporarily suspended in order to prevent the spread of the COVID 19 virus. However, this does not apply to esports. Precisely in the midst of a pandemic like today, Esports is even more in demand. Unlike other sports, esports can still be run online where the competing teams do not need to meet physically and the match can also be broadcast via live streaming.

Apart from the many esports tournaments being held, the surge in public interest in esports can also be seen from the large number of viewers who enjoy esports content. This was conveyed by Todd Sitrin as Senior Vice President of Electronic Arts Inc.’s Competitive Gaming Division. According to him, this spike occurred because traditional sports competitions were temporarily suspended. So, now these sports fans are watching Esports shows to fulfill their desire for sports content offerings.

Garry Ongko Putera, the CEO of the BOOM Esports team, also expressed the increasing public interest in Esports. According to him, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Esports was even more crowded. Moreover, conventional sports athletes also take to Esports to fill their activities.

“During the current pandemic, sponsors are holding back. But this is not because Esports is declining. Nowadays, Esports is increasingly known by everyone. Especially now that people can’t watch football or the NBA. Even now football players are playing FIFA. So I can say that esports during this pandemic is getting more and more famous,” he said.

Based on data revealed by Newzoo, the number of eSports viewers around the world is predicted to increase this year. Even the number could reach 495 million people. This rapid increase occurred in several developing countries in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Asia. This development is also supported by the advancement of IT infrastructure and the increasing popularity of mobile games with the MOBA and Battle Royale genres.
