Cyberpunk and Witcher 3 Source Code Auction Hackers

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – The group claiming to be behind the CD Projekt Red hack recently reportedly auctioned off the hacked source code for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3. PS5 and Xbox Series X/S) are being sold on the EXPLOIT forum with a starting bid of $1,000.

Reported by Video Games Chronicle, the ransomware attack was allegedly carried out by a group called HelloKitty. The hacker is also reported to have posted the source code for CD Projekt Red’s card game Gwent online, with the leak spreading to several forums.

CD Projekt Red revealed on Monday (8/2/2021) that it had been the victim of a targeted cyber attack. In a statement, the developer said some of its internal systems had been compromised and “certain data” stolen.

In the ransom note published alongside the statement, the perpetrators claimed that they had stolen the source code for the above-mentioned games as well as documents relating to corporate accounting, law, HR and others. If CD Projekt Red doesn’t “reach an agreement” with them within 48 hours, the perpetrator says they will sell or leak the content.

CD Projekt Red said it would not give in to the demands or negotiate with the people behind the attacks. The Poland-based company said it had approached relevant authorities including law enforcement and IT forensic specialists.

“We are taking the necessary steps to mitigate the consequences of such a release, in particular by contacting any parties who may be affected by the breach. We are still investigating the incident, but at this time we can confirm to the best of our knowledge the compromised systems do not contain any personal data of players or users of our services.”

This hacking case itself is suspected to be hampering the improvement of the Cyberpunk 2077 game. However, CD Projekt will not change its plans to release a bigger patch for the game this month. Analyst at Trigon DM, Kacper Kopron said the incident risked further loss of confidence in the company following the disappointing release of Cyberpunk 2077. The troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077 saw Sony pull the game from the PlayStation Store in just over a week.
