Avengers Sales Slow, Square Enix Admits Not Yet Return of Investment

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Square Enix has confirmed that the initial sales of Marvel’s Avengers games are still slow, which means the game with a capital of almost 190 million USD or around Rp. 2.4 trillion has not turned a profit for the company. This month the Japanese company’s HD Games division posted an operating loss of about 7 billion yen or about Rp948 billion for the three months ended September 30, which is linked to the Avengers launch.

In a new financial document published in English on Wednesday (11/25/2021), Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda confirmed that the game’s live service could not cover its development costs during the month of its release.

“The HD Games sub-segment posted an operating loss as initial sales of Marvel’s Avengers were lower than we expected and were unable to fully offset the amortization of game development costs. Besides the amortization of the game’s development costs, another important factor associated with the title is the fact that we carried out a massive advertising campaign at the time of its release to cover delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda.

Previously, a Japan-based analyst claimed that Square Enix spent nearly 190 million USD on Avengers production and marketing, but the game only sold around three million copies. Avengers is releasing for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on September 4. In addition to technical issues, the lack of post-launch content, including delays to the planned expansion and subsequent versions of the game, contributed to the game’s reduced player count.

Square Enix hopes to make up for sluggish sales by offering enough additional content. Last week it was confirmed that Marvel’s Avengers’ first new hero, Kate Bishop, which was originally slated to launch in October, will be released on December 8.

“In the second half of the fiscal year, we hope to cover the slow initial sales by offering enough additional content to increase our sales,” Matsuda said.
