MUI Holds Discussions Regarding "PUBG Haram", What Are the Results?

Telset.id, Jakarta – Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) has held a Forum Group Discussion (FGD) with several related experts games PlayerUnknow’s BattleGround (PUBG) and other games that are judged to contain elements of violence. Will there be a fatwa? PUBG is haram?

The FGD which was held at the MUI Headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday (26/03/2021), with several agendas, did not only focus on PUBG.

The topics discussed in the FGD are games Overall, it is indicated that there are elements of violence, radicalism, and terrorism in it.

Secretary of the MUI Fatwa Commission Asrorun Niam Sholeh explained that at this meeting there were several inputs from the Ministry of Communications and Informatics, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), the Indonesian e-Sports Association, psychologists, to the Presidential Staff Office.

“The discussion has obtained some notes at this meeting. Game as a cultural product has negative and positive sides. For this reason, FGD participants have the same view of optimizing the positive side of the game, one of which is channeling through eSports which optimizes benefits, minimizes negative impacts,” said Niam.

Niam also said that both MUI and FGD participants were of one voice that there must be restrictions on games that affect users. Unfortunately, Niam did not explain whether the game in question was PUBG or not.

“For example, there is a game that hits the teacher, in the end the child hits the teacher right. This is just a picture of a game that has an impact on its users. Things like this we have in common to be limited and prohibited,” said Niam.

On this occasion, Niam said that there was an understanding to limit age, content, time, and the impact.

“Besides the restrictions, there is also a ban on several types of games that clearly contain pornographic content, gambling, deviant sexual behavior, and content that is prohibited by religion and statutory regulations,” he explained.

“In this FGD it does not refer to one type of game, but rather to games with negative content and then assessed to what extent it has an impact and influence on users and society. We are referring to one product, but the whole,” added Niam.

Regarding the follow-up to this meeting, whether a fatwa was issued or the issuance of laws and regulations, Niam explained that it would be investigated by the MUI Fatwa Commission. [NM/HBS]
