Make Upset! These are the 12 worst games in the last 10 years
The last decade has brought many amazing games with titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Last of Us that have raised the bar for interactive entertainment. Even so, not all titles released in the last ten years can be categorized as revolutionary games. Some even fall into the category of the worst game.
For every successful AAA game there are enough projects that miss the mark. Even a game backed by lofty goals and good intentions can go a long way from the creator’s vision. With that in mind, here is a review of some of the worst universally disliked games of the past ten years.
The Quiet Man
The game that is included in the list of the first worst games is The Quiet Man. Released in 2021, The Quiet Man is baffling from every angle. It’s hard to understand how the people involved believe they are making a good product. Although this action game uses a deaf protagonist as its concept which is a slick approach.
The title has no tutorial and players are forced to “grope to find out” through a series of repetitive fight scenes. In a more whimsical design option, you’ll be forced to finish the game and then unlock a second game that includes sound and dialogue.
Agony
The next worst game is Agony, released in 2021 after a very successful Kickstarter campaign. The game, which follows this cursed soul’s quest to escape Hell, received minor note from the game which was originally released in an “unedited” version but was eventually cancelled.
When released, Agony received universally negative reviews. Much of the criticism has centered on the perceived nature of the game as trying too hard, with disgusting visuals and a narrative that feels like they take precedence over actual gameplay. Despite overwhelming criticism, the Nintendo Switch port of Agony was finally released in October 2021.
NBA 2K20
NBA 2K20 divides critics and fans alike. On Metacritic, the NBA 2K20 PC release averaged 74/100, but had a very low 0.4/10 score from user-submitted reviews. Consensus among fans seems to be ignored.
There are a lot of reviews on Steam that address the game server connectivity issues and rely heavily on microtransactions, which makes many players feel this game was made with a pay-to-win setup. Another review felt the title failed to evolve from previous versions in this game franchise. But despite these issues, NBA2K20 is actually a solid game with ideal interactions.
FlatOut 3: Chaos and Destruction
The FlatOut series is a fusion of traditional racing game mechanics and vehicular combat with an emphasis on realistic damage. 2011’s FlatOut 3: Chaos & Destruction is the first game in the franchise to be developed without input from Bugbear Entertainment, the original developer, and something seems to be missing in the transition.
Many reviews have raised issues with AI and buggy tracks, as well as concepts that seem to be carried over from previous entries. One reviewer claims that playing against the computer in FlatOut 3 is like playing online against a whole bunch of rogue players who are all glued to ruining each other’s races.
Ride to Hell: Retribution
Instead it’s an ideal blend of the chaos of Grand Theft Auto style and the aesthetics of Sons of Anarchy. Ride to Hell: Retribution actually looks disappointing to deserve the worst game label. When Ride to Hell: Retribution finally released in 2021, critics criticized the game for its poor graphics, substandard fighting mechanics, and insanely wild driving controls.
The wide gap between teaser and release results, together with its many flaws, leads to a difficult development cycle. You can see this in the number of features removed from the game during its production. Ride to Hell initially included hundreds of licensed songs but eventually had to disappear one by one.
Rambo: Video Games
Games tied to a film are usually hit or miss in terms of quality. But Sylvester Stallone is one actor who seems to consistently stand out when it comes to video game adaptations of his films. 1995’s Judge Dredd is as unattractive as the film that spawned it, while 2002’s Rocky contains a very glitchy mess.
So, it should come as no surprise to see the Rambo game still disappointing given how ill-suited the film adaptation of Rambo is for video games. Rambo: The Video Game comes six years after the previous Rambo film and five years before the next, setting it off at an odd time for an adaptation. This game debuted in chaos mode where there are quite a lot of things that don’t work and seem to waste the characters and the main premise.
Vroom in the Night Sky
The fact that Vroom in the Night Sky was released in 2021 is a racing game that feels like half-baked in every way. This is certainly not the type of game release that fits into a new console like the Nintendo Switch.
Despite its many flaws, the biggest attack on Vroom in the Sky is the lack of content. This game is claimed to be completed in 1-2 hours, but even those short races feel unimportant and problematic.
The graphics are low quality and collecting Stardust to buy new bikes for your character feels useless as the controls are slow and imprecise regardless of what vehicle you’re using. Even the next update also seems to focus on all the wrong elements.
Poisoft updated its poor Japanese-to-English translation script that featured weird dialogue like “Now I am the wind!”. Unfortunately, this update also makes the game worse by filling the text with typos and grammatical errors.
Fighter Within
Launched in 2021 for the Xbox One, this game is meant to take advantage of the Kinect’s capabilities by offering gamers the chance to feel like they’re in real combat. Unfortunately, as Danielle Riendeau of Polygon points out, Fighter Within fails to read player moves properly.
This resulted in the game being plagued by rampant technical issues and poor dialogue writing. Most of the reviews on this game seem to agree with this sentiment. Even the claim that often arises is the fact that the game’s strong premise has been undermined by bugs and unresponsive controls. What’s most disappointing is that this is the second game in the series to suffer from the same issue in its previous release.
Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma
The first video game adaptation of the Afro Samurai anime offers decent gameplay. At least, like the series that inspired it, this game features a fantastic soundtrack from RZA. Unfortunately, the 2021 follow-up to Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma was even worse.
Mike Fahey of Kotaku finds himself unable to finish the game. Instead, it spends most of its review detailing a lot of technicalities, including unresponsive controls. Revenge of Kuma was a major disaster for the developers at Versus Evil who ended up having to pull the game off sale.
Fast & Furious: Showdown
Did you know that in his career Vin Diesel has starred in The Pacifier, a film where he plays a Navy SEAL who is in charge of raising five children. The film eventually flopped at the time and forced Vin Diesel to reject the appearance or use of his likeness in the 2021 video game adaptation.
As a concept, the game which is a remix of the Fast & Furious movie has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, Fast & Furious: Showdown looks so messy that fans of the film hate it too. The main problem comes from poor controls and difficult missions to complete.
Worst of all is the fact that the game squanders the potential fun inherent in the film’s inspirational source material. Fast & Furious: Showdown also fails on nearly every level to capture the energy, panic and enthusiasm of this film.
Alone in the Dark: Illumination
Not only is 2021’s Alone in the Dark: Illumination the worst entry in the Alone in the Dark franchise. But this game is one of the horror games with the worst reviews. The title revamped the series that was largely known to the public and replaced it with solitary exploration and survival.
These changes force the game to enter the co-op realm with a ridiculous plot, poor controls, and glitchy graphics. Worst of all? This game is not even scary at all. One review described Illumination as “an almost perfect accompaniment of poor game design….”
There has even been some speculation that Atari may have intentionally released the game at the same time as the 2021 E3 conference in an effort to ensure the game is undetected by most game journalists. THQ Nordic bought the rights to Alone in the Dark in 2021, so we may be in for a new nightmare in the near future.
Amy
The last game that deserves a stamp as the worst game for the last 10 years is Amy. Amy itself is a survival-horror game in 2012, has an interesting premise, namely an autistic girl with super powers must fight zombies and avoid the mysterious organization that is tracking her. Unfortunately, the final product squanders that premise.
IGN calls Amy a “gross mess of game design choices that confuses and makes for bad controllers,” citing poor controls, broken puzzle solving, and an embarrassingly stilted sound often acting as the game’s biggest weaknesses.
Amy received a major update that added new save points to the game, as well as a few other quality changes, but the game has been an absurdly problematic experience for many players.
