How to Install Linux Kubuntu Dual Boot with Windows 10

mrfdn – A few days ago I installed a new os on my Thinkpad X220 laptop which is a Linux distro Kubuntu 20.04 running dual boot with Windows 10 on a GPT (UEFI) partition.

This article is a note about what I have done correctly because it successfully installed this distro.

Previously my laptop was installed with Ubuntu Studio 20.04 which is very stable and supports all the work I do such as graphic design, photo editing, coding, browsing and watching movies.

But there is one mistake that I did, which was accidentally following the tutorial from youtube to give the root password, and it failed..

Because I don’t know how to fix it, I just install another os.

And I choose this Kubuntu 20.04.

Incidentally, I haven’t tasted the latest version of this KDE-based distro for a long time.

Steps to install Kubuntu 20.04

If it’s your first time installing Linux Kubuntu on your laptop/computer, please first check on your Windows whether you’re using a GPT/UEFI or MBR/Legacy partition system.

It’s like this:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  2. Type diskpart
  3. Type disk list to view existing drives.
  4. In the list that appears, look at the GPT column and below
    there are stars

. This means that your computer has a GPT system. If there is no star it means your system is MBR.

diskpart list

How to install Linux on a GPT or MBR partition is actually the same, the difference is in the method of choosing the Bootloader only.

  1. Here are the steps.

  2. Download the Kubuntu 20.04 .iso file which is about 2gb in size.
  3. Using Rufus, create a bootable disk from the iso to a Flash disk of 4 GB or more.

  4. After the flash disk is ready, boot and enter the BIOS and select the first boot to the flash disk. I choose Try Ubuntu
to use linux live forbackup files contained in /home linux Ubuntu Studio

  5. .
  6. After the backup I continued to install Kubuntu.

  7. You can choose Standard install or Miminal install. Here I choose standard install so I don’t bother installing applications such as Libre Office, VLC and several other supporting applications.

  8. Manually select the partition and I format the Ubuntu Studio partition then mount it to / (root)
    The most important step
because this is a GPT partition, on the bootloader select the Windows 10 GPT default EFI partition (on my laptop it says dev/sda2) as the bootloader installed.Remember, not on dev/sda
    .
  9. If the laptop partition is Legacy/MBR, just install the bootloader on dev/sda.

Continue, and wait for the process to complete.

For the record, the Ubuntu Studio bootloader will be overwritten by the new Kubuntu bootloader. See the results after the installation is complete.

Do not format this EFI partition, because it will damage the Windows default bootloader.

After installing Kubuntu 20.04

Standard embedded applications only, such as VLC, Libre Office and Firefox.

There are no apps like GIMP, Inkscape, or Blender yet.

Yeay..

Review using Kubuntu 20.04

The latest Kubuntu is great for everyday use.

The new KDE 5 desktop provides a very comfortable experience.

The impression is minimalist, elegant, and light.

Day by day the development of the KDE desktop feels lighter. If you still think KDE is heavy, please install the latest Kubuntu.

Stable file manager

I very often use a file manager (explorer in Windows) to access my files.

There are no significant obstacles, when doing a search.

Because, remember, when I used Manjaro KDE, the search feature was unstable on my laptop.

The final word

The latest Kubuntu distribution provides a fun experience using linux so that it feels minimalist, elegant and stable.

Thus the article on how to install Linux Kubuntu dual boot with Windows 10.

Hope it is useful.
