Guide on How to Partition a Hard Drive in Windows 10 Complete + Image
The term hard disk partition may be familiar in the computer world. Partitioning a hard drive is a method for dividing a hard drive into several parts (partitions) so that data management is much neater and structured.
For me personally, partitioning the hard disk is mandatory for all computer users, so that we can group data according to its place. For example, I have a partition with the name TUGAS KULIAH, so all data or files related to college assignments will be placed on this partition.
How to Partition Hard Drive in Windows 10
For Windows 10 users, maybe what you have in mind is, how do you partition the hard drive in Windows 10? So, through the following article, I will explain in as much detail as I can about how to partition a hard drive in Windows 10, starting from reducing the size of the partition, creating a new partition, deleting partitions to increasing the size of a partition, all of which I will explain in full.
First step: First open Disk Management by right-clicking the windows logo located at the bottom left of the desktop screen.
Second step: You will see information about the partitions on the HDD of your PC or laptop. As you can see in the example above, partition C: is 20GB and partition D: is 40GB. I purposely rounded it up so you can understand it more easily. And to System Reserved, you just ignore it.
As I said before that I will explain about hard disk partitions, from reducing the size of the partition to increasing the size of the partition, where you can see all the tutorials below.
Reduce partition size (shrink volume)
Shrink this volume allows us to shrink or split a partition. The size of the partition that we shrink earlier will become unallocated space. And you can use it to increase the size of another partition or to create a new partition.
1. Right-click the partition you want, then select Shrink Volume. For example, I want to reduce the size partition D.
2. Enter the amount of capacity you want (in MB). For example, I want to shrink the partition by 15GB from the total partition size.
3. As you can see below, the size of partition D which was originally 40 GB has now become approximately 25 GB.
4. While what you shrink earlier now becomes Unallocated. You can use it to increase the size of another partition or to create a new partition.
Create a new partition (new simple volume)
To create a new partition, we need the name unallocated space. We’ve done volume shrink earlier, so we now have unallocated space or unallocated hard disk space. To create a partition, do the following:
1. Right click Unallocated, then select New Simple Volume.
2. Next select Next.
3. Determine the size of the new partition you want. For example, I use all 15 GB for me to make a new partition. If so, select Next.
4. You are asked to choose drive letter on your new partition. This drive letter is the identity of a partition in the form of an alphabet, for example AZ. For example, I chose F, so later the partition I just created can be called partition F. Then select Next.
6. Name your new partition, for example: COURSEWORK. If you have selected Next.
7. Your new partition has been created, please select Finish.
8. The partition F named COURSEWORK finished and ready to use.
Deleting partition (delete volume)
If you want to delete a partition, first make sure that you have backed up all the data on that partition. The partition you delete later will become free space and you can use it to create a new partition again or to enlarge another partition.
1. Select the partition you want to delete. For example, I want to delete partition F. Right click partition F, then select Delete Volume.
2. Then you will get a notification telling you to backup your data first. If you are sure, select Yes.
3. The partition you deleted earlier will become free space. Different from unallocated, this free space includes the partition but has not been formatted and labeled drive letter.
Increase the size of the partition (extend volume)
Now to increase the size of a partition, we need unallocated space no free space. So first you have to delete free space to be unallocated in the following way:
1. Right click free space and select Delete Partition.
2. If you get a notification like the picture below, select Yes.
3. As you can see in the image below, we now have unallocated space. So you can increase the size of other partitions by merging unallocated space this to that partition.
4. For example I want to increase the size of partition D. Right click partition D, then select Extend Volume.
5. Then select Next.
6. Determine what size you want. Suppose the size of the unallocated space is 15 GB, and you want to add the total unallocated space to partition D, so just select Next. In this example, I combined the total unallocated space to partition D.
7. Then select Finish.
8. As you can see in the image below, partition D which was originally 25 GB is now 40 GB (25 GB + 15 GB of unallocated space).
That’s a complete guide on how to partition a hard drive in Windows 10. Make sure you listen carefully step by step and make sure you backup your data first. Because if you are wrong in just a few steps, the data on your hard drive is at stake.
