With the closure, Squaren Enix has finally announced the next series that fans have been waiting for, namely Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate.

Dragon Quest is a Japanese RPG series that first launched in 1987 on the Famicom (NES) and quickly became one of the pioneers of the RPG genre, becoming one of the first mainstream console RPGs ever created and the basis for all JRPG genres.

The series has become a cultural phenomenon in Japan by inspiring many manga, anime, and film adaptations that are usually referenced in other media, including most recently in Sega’s Yakuza series.

The last major title is Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age which was first released back in 2021 and has received a re-release with even better improvements.

During the presentation, Square Enix revealed that there are 6 upcoming Dragon Quest titles, including a Dragon Quest 3 remake from the team behind Octopath Traveler, a new expansion for the Japan-only MMORPG Dragon Quest 10, a spinoff featuring Dragon Quest 11 party members and many more.

The presentation concluded with the announcement of the main Dragon Quest sequel that fans have been waiting for for years, namely Dragon Quest: The Flames of Fate which will be the next mainline game in the RPG series.

Although the game was developed several years ago, the details regarding Dragon Quest XII are quite unique. Interestingly, Yuji Horii revealed that The Flames of Fate would be a more mature Dragon Quest game and he called the game “Dragon Quest for adults”, maybe that’s an expression that the game is intended for adults.

Not only that, he also said that there would be some changes to the turn-based command system, but didn’t specify whether this would be a complete battle overhaul or whether Dragon Quest would follow the Final Fantasy concept towards a more action-focused direction.

Horii has claimed several times that Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate will focus heavily on player choice with the character’s “fate” being the core theme of the game.

Some fans have noted that Horri’s description of decision-making may be related to the return of the jobs system from Dragon Quest 9, which allows players to create custom characters and play together online as part of a party.

Apart from that, we don’t have any further information regarding Dragon Quest XII. Horii also declined to comment on what platforms the game will be available on and the release date.
