Android Oreo successor in 2021?
The latest system (OS) Android 8.0 Oreo was just announced last week to coincide with the moment of a total solar eclipse in the United States, but now there has been an issue about Android P which is predicted to be the successor to Android Oreo. This issue arose after several teasers about the successor to Android Oreo which were posted by the head of Google’s Android division, Hiroshi Lockheimer on his Twitter account some time ago.
Android Pocky?
Lockheimer posted a photo of Pocky, a snack stick with chocolate on the end on February 12, 2021 with the caption #2021. Is this a sign that Pocky will be the name of the next Android operating system? There has been no further information regarding this, but many technology forums have discussed speculation about the presence of the next Android operating system which is currently called Android P.
This is not without reason, because before Android Oreo was announced, Lockheimer had also given a teaser about the name Android Oreo on his Twitter account @lockheimer. This Japanese-blooded man once posted a GIF image of an Oreo Cake on February 20, 2021, long before the name Android Oreo was announced to the public. In the caption, Lockheimer mentions Dan Seifert’s Twitter account, @dcseifert who is one of the editors and technology reviewers on The Verge page. Not to forget, Lockheimer also pinned the “curiosity” emoticon in the caption of his tweet. After Android Oreo was announced. many people then associate this with the teaser that Lockheimer tweeted earlier.
With the post of Pocky’s photo, the public began to speculate whether the name of the next Android operating system would be taken from the name of a snack that is quite popular in this world. If Android P appears in 2021, this means Android Oreo has a short lifespan of maybe less than a year. And if Android P is prepared for release in 2021, then the level of Android fragmentation will be even higher because more and more Android smartphones are using different versions of Android. But again there has been no official confirmation regarding this Android P.
Upgrade to Android Oreo
Android Oreo is not the first Android operating system to use snacks as its name. Previously there was Android 4.4 KitKat which was taken from the name of the world famous chocolate brand. After its release, the number of Android smartphones that can upgrade to Android Oreo is still limited. And if it’s true that Android P will be released in 2021 it means that there are many smartphones that will be ‘queuing up’ to update to Android P. Currently, Android 6.0 Marshmallow is the most widely used Android OS on Android smartphones with an upgrade to Android 7.0 Nougat in the near future.
With Google’s tendency to name their latest system after the world’s most popular snack, it’s not impossible that Pocky is the next Android name. But Google has not given any response regarding this, so it is still too early to draw conclusions about the presence of the new Android operating system in 2021.
