2. Select tab Insert > Page Number, then select the position of the page number you want either above or below. For example, I chose Bottom of Page > Plain Number 2.

2. How to Create Page Numbers in Roman Numerals

1. Open your Microsoft Word.

2. Double click the page number of the document (here the page number is in roman numerals).

3. Then select tab Design, then tick Options > Different First Page. Then, the first page or cover will not have page numbers.

4. However, the second page (after the cover) still has page numbers starting from ii (number 2 in roman form) and not i (first number in roman).

4. How to Create a Second Page Numbered i (First Roman Numeral)

1. Open your document in Microsoft Word.

2. Then, activate the first page or cover by clicking on the last letter as shown in the image below, I clicked after the number 8 of 2021.

3. Select tab Layout > Breaks > Section Breaks > Continuous.

4. After “Continuous” is clicked, the page number on the second page also disappears where it previously had a number ii but now there is no number.

5. How to Create Different Page Numbers in One Document

Generally in writing documents such as reports, papers or theses we use different page numbering in one document such as several parts of the document (cover, preface, table of contents) numbered with Roman numerals and other parts (CHAPTER I, CHAPTER II, CHAPTER III and bibliography) are numbered with Arabic numerals.

1. For example, we have numbered pages with roman numerals for the introduction to the table of contents. CHAPTER 1, CHAPTER 2 and so on are also still numbered with Roman numerals. Whereas CHAPTER 1, CHAPTER 2 and so on should have page numbers in the form of Arabic numerals starting from 1.
