2021 Pyeongchang Olympics Holds eSports Tournament!
There is good news for eSports lovers. Although eSports failed to enter the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the eSports tournament will be held at the 2021 PyeongChang Winter Olympics in February!
This good news was announced directly by Intel. This is part of Intel’s partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that allows the company to bring eSports to the 2021 Pyeongchang Olympics in two different gaming experiences.
Intel Extreme Masters PyeongChang 2021
Welcoming the winter Olympics in South Korea, Intel will hold the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) PyeongChang eSports tournament which will feature StarCraft II from Blizzard Entertainment. Intel will also hold a separate exhibition featuring the Steep Road to the Olympics game; an action-sports game from Ubisoft which is the official game for the 2021 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
“The StarCraft series has played an important role in esports, so we are very honored that StarCraft II will represent eSports in PyeongChang. This is a great opportunity for eSports to shine on the biggest international sporting scene, and we are proud that some of StarCraft II’s most skilled players will be helping lead the way.” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, as quoted from the Tribunnews.com page.
The Intel Extreme Masters PyeongChang tournament, which is a continuation of IEM in collaboration with ESL (the largest eSports company), is open to the public at any level. The qualifying round will be held globally online in November 2021. The offline qualifying round will also be held in Beijing in December 2021.
Steep Road to the Olympics
Through the IEM tournament, Intel will also provide interactive gaming experiences throughout the Olympic Village for participants and athletes through a game kiosk featuring Steep Road to the Olympics which is the official game of the 2021 PyeongChang Olympics.
Both Olympic fans and gamers also have the opportunity to compete to be the best in an exhibition that also features Steep Road to the Olympics. Intel promised to release more information about this in November.
Intel, ESL, Ubisoft and Blizzard Unite
The entry of eSports tournaments at the PyeongChang Olympics is one of the efforts to bring eSports to a higher level in the world. And for the PyeongChang event, not only Intel was involved, but also ESL, Ubisoft, Blizzard and IOC Television and Marketing Services.
“Intel has fully supported esports for more than a decade and our goal is to bring esports to be an exciting spectacle to every global sporting scene. From the qualifying event to the groundbreaking Intel Extreme Masters tournament in PyeongChang, we see this as an important step to give more people around the world the opportunity to immerse themselves in the thrill of esports.” said Gregory Bryant, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Client Computing Group at Intel Corporation, as quoted from the Tribunnews.com page.
“We are proud to be a part of the eSports exhibition to welcome the Winter Olympics which will give the public even more ways to engage with the sport they love. We have developed the ‘Steep Road to the Olympics’ in close relationship with the IOC and we are looking forward to this competition. We can’t wait for our fans to play and compete in our new game.” said Geoffroy Sardin, Ubisoft’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, as quoted from the Tribunnews.com page.
“As one of the fastest growing media and entertainment establishments, we are honored to push the esports industry further by facilitating the Intel Extreme Masters tournament in PyeongChang. Esports already has a global fan base so this event in PyeongChang naturally suits our audience.” said Ralf Reichert, CEO of ESL, as quoted from the Tribunnews.com page.
As is known, Intel and ESL are two of the world’s top companies leading the fastest growing eSports worldwide. Both of them will facilitate all events related to eSports at the 2021 Pyeongchang Olympics. Gamers who cannot come directly to South Korea can watch this match through Olympic Channel’s global digital platform and digital partners which will be announced in the near future.
