Here are the steps for editing photos in our landscape photography.

1. Prepare the software

You have to install photo editing software/application first

In general, every photographer should learn photo editing applications such as Photoshop or Lightroom.

Both of these applications will make your photos better. There are many advantages of this application.

If you use a smartphone, there are alternative applications such as Snapseed, Vsco, and others.

2. Select the photo you want to edit

The condition is that the photo must be your best photo.

If you use lightroom, you can import any photos that are your best photos and then you can edit them one by one without having to re-select them in the main folder where you save your photos.

If you use Photoshop, you have to open your photo folder first and then choose which photo you want to edit.

3. Make sure to align the horizontal plane

Landscape photos / scenery is actually must have a straight horizontal plane.

Because this is the most crucial thing for people to see at a glance.

So the first thing you have to do is straigten or straighten a flat plane.

For example, if you take a photo on the beach with a view of the sea and the sun, then the position of the sea must be really straight, if it tilts a little it will make people uncomfortable seeing your photo.

4. Exposure and white balance

Exposure is about the right brightness of the image.

While white balance is about natural or not the color of your landscape photo.

To edit the exposure and white balance, make sure to take photos in raw mode.

5. Dodge and burn

Dodge and burn this about the parts that you want to reduce or increase brightness.

For example, if you get an exposure that your sky looks too bright, then you have to burn it, whereas if you find your land is a bit dark then you have to do some dodging. Dodge and burn can be done in Photoshop and Lightroom.

Start doing it with a low opacity like 10% first.

6. Clean up annoying areas with the clone stamp feature

A good landscape photo always presents a photo that looks clean.

If you find a dirty area such as specks on the sky or there is trash on the ground, you can clean it using the clone stamp found in Photoshop.

Clone stamp will make your photos look cleaner than dirt.

Unfortunately, there is no application that can detect dirt on the camera, so that’s why must be done manually.

7. Masking

Actually masking is an advanced technique that you can use to edit photos.

Before learning about masking, you must know the basic functions of Photoshop itself.

With masking you will do photo editing in certain areas easily without changing the authenticity of the photo on the original layer (complicated to explain).

The masking function is actually the same, photo editing can be done without masking, such as dodge and burning, white balance, and others.

8. Fix noise

Noise in photos can appear due to improper exposure, use of filters that are too dark, or the camera’s ability to reduce noise is not good.

Landscape photos that have very severe noise will not look good.

The best way to fix noise is to start by taking the right picture, with the right exposure so that the noise that appears can at least be muted.

Meanwhile, if the noise is very severe it will be difficult to remove.

The advantages of editing the photo noise will make the photo look weird. So pay attention to the limitations, don’t let your landscape photos look weird on the screen.

9. Sharpen the image

The last thing to do is sharpen the photo.

Adjusting the sharpness of the image can be done with the sharpen feature, or the highpass in Photoshop.

While in lightroom you can find the sharpen details mode. The limit for sharpening an image is by looking at the pixels, try not to make it too sharp either, because it will make your photo look weird.

Adjust it to look normal.

10. Take advantage of the snapshot feature found in lightroom

The function of a snapshoot is like doing a history of recording photo settings.

Sometimes we already get great results from our photos, but still want to do more editing.

Now the snapshoot function is to record traces of our photo settings, without having to save the image file, then continue editing again.

With snapshots you can choose which photo edits you like.

To do a snapshot in Photoshop you have to do it separately by first saving your photo in a .PSD file, then make new settings into a layer group, by separating the old editing layer group from the new editing layer group.

11. Resize photos before uploading to Instagram

If you like uploading photos on websites or social media like Facebook or Instagram. You can resize the photo first.

Set the widest/longest side of your photo to a maximum of 2048px. Then save using the save for web feature in Photoshop, and save with a .JPG file.

With settings like that, when photos are uploaded to Instagram, the results will not be broken.
