Tips: How to Record a Laptop or Desktop PC Screen

Recording a laptop screen is usually a routine activity carried out by someone who for example: likes to make gaming tutorials and share them on Youtube. In addition, those who like to make software tutorials must also know this activity and may have been doing it for years.

Recording events on the screen of a laptop or desktop PC is actually easy. You can start by downloading a free screen recorder. There are several options available, but maybe at first you should be aware that Windows already has a built-in screen recorder. This tool is hidden in the pre-installed Xbox app.

Then you can also record activities on the screen through a browser window without downloading or installing large programs. It all depends on what you want to record, the hardware used and how much time it takes.

Before you know how to use the built-in screen recorder, you should learn some of the free software below:

  1. Use Flashback Express

This is a good software that will help you record activities on the laptop screen easily. Flashback Express is preferred because it is more flexible.

Download and install the software, then click “Record your screen” to find various custom setting options. There you can choose whether you want to record the entire screen, a specific window, or a specific area selected with your mouse or webcam. Then you can also make it more detailed, such as whether the recording will include sound from the mic, speaker or both.

Digging deeper into the menus means the possibility of getting more options, including the ability to separate the recorded audio from the video file (which will help with later editing), limit the recording time and file size, and many more options. Users can even schedule recording sessions, or specify when specific apps should be opened.

Once you’ve set up everything you need, you can start recording. Done with the recording session, you can see the results in FlashBack Express 5 Player which is included in the download package. That’s where you can make adjustments such as cropping, cropping videos, and so on.

If you want to record games, we recommend FBX which is dedicated to recording gaming activities. This application is provided by Blueberry Software.

2. Apowersoft

If you don’t want to be bothered with program installation, you can record your PC screen from any browser, using Apowersoft Free Online Screen Recorder. In many ways, it is better than most desktop software for the same purpose.

All you need to do is visit the Apowersoft website and then click on the “Start Recording” option. An application launcher will open, where you will find a recording bar.

Because it’s online, you can record as long as you want without any additional features. You can record directly from the screen or from a webcam. Users can even enter notes during the recording process – and this makes it ideal for creating tutorials or presentations.

Once done, click the pause button. The recording will be saved in the Documents folder in MP4 format.

3. Windows Game Bar

Although hidden, Windows 10 has a built-in screen recording tool, which is intended for recording games. If you want to find it, open the Xbox app then press the button [Windows]+[G] on the keyboard and click the “Yes, this is a game” option or something.

Click ‘Start Recording’ or tap section [Windows]+[Alt]+[R] to start a recording session, then use the same shortcut when you’re done. The recorded video will be saved in the Videos/Caputre folder in MP4 format.

To customize the recorder settings, go into the Xbox app and access the Game DVR options. You can’t choose where to save the recording file, but you can choose the quality setting, or decide whether the recording will use audio or not. And you can also set the length of the recorded video.

Unfortunately not all Windows 10 devices can take advantage of the Game Bar. Because this application can only be used if the user installs a graphics card that supports one of the following: encoder such as Intel Quick Sync H.260, NVidia NVENC, and AMD VCE.
