BENQ ZOWIE S1 & S2 Review: Ambi eSport Gaming Mouse

As e-sports enthusiasts or gamers, of course we will be familiar with this one brand. First appeared on December 10, 2008, Zowie is a well-known gaming gear brand dedicated to releasing gaming gear for e-Sports. At that time, Zowie had released the mice that became the forerunner of their current product like Zowie Mico, AM (ambidextrous mouse) and their other products. Unfortunately, Zowie’s name was less well known at that time. Brand names such as Steelseries/Logitech are still high because many e-Sports teams at that time already held these brands as sponsors.

On December 10, 2021, Zowie was acquired by BenQ which is the largest brand in Asia for electronic equipment branch. After that, Zowie’s name immediately emerged in the e-Sports community and became one of the brands that released the best gaming mouse.

modern, Zowie has become the standard for pro players in choosing a mouse, especially for FPS genres such as CS: GO, Rainbow Six, Quake Champion and other games. Zowie always releases mouse products for different hand and grip options, whether it’s for right/left handed users or for palm/claw/fingertip grip users. As an example: Zowie EC series for right-handed users or gamers who want a great mouse ergonomics and Zowie FK and ZA for left and right handed users or gamers who want a mouse that is ambidextrous.

But it doesn’t stop there, this year Zowie has released the latest mouse series line, namely S(standard) series which has a characteristic ambidextrous with better specifications than its predecessor. And now, Pemmz get a chance to review the mouse S-series the.

Curious about the performance and quality? let’s start right away check it out!

Packaging

To packaging, nothing fancy like a Zowie mouse in general. Zowie S1 and S2 are only equipped with User Guide, Warranty Card, Logo Sticker and also Backup Glides. Glide what Zowie gave here is not like a series EC2-B which is very small and has a slick character, but tends to be like glide in the previous mouse series that is EC2-A, FK and ZA that have Glide which is bigger and has more character mat.

Build Quality

By build quality, Zowie S1 and S2 very solid and not empty at all. When the author conducts a trial will quality, the mouse is the same as the other Zowie series either way EC, ZA or FK. When shaken, this mouse does not make any sound (rattle). This mouse also has a balanced weight between up, down, left and right side of the mouse, so this mouse remains stable and not biased like some other gaming mice.

Sadly, Zowie still have a character optical scroll wheel they were quite noisy. This might be tolerance considering scroll wheel Zowie very consistent and will not error at all, especially for games that use scrolls such as FPS to change weapons. But plus points what you need to pay attention to is scroll Zowie S1 and S2 which is black, some cases say that the mouse Zowie which uses a white scroll will quickly turn yellow as in the case EC-2B.

For materials cable, Zowie S1 and S2 still using the same ingredients i.e soft rubber which is elastic and not easily twisted. The thing that is quite unique here is the cable management that is different from other series. The placement of the cable on this mouse tends to be more tall compared to the previous series which is much lower, so that when the mouse uses the mouse bungee, the cable won’t hit the mousepad at all.

And the last one for coating, Zowie S1 and S2 use matte coating which is good, so that our hands will not slip if we use this mouse in a fast tempo. Perhaps learning from before, Zowie heard community suggestions or e-Sports enthusiasts who complained about Zowie S1/S2 Divina using Glossy coating which tends to be slippery and very annoying for gamers who sweat quickly.

Design

By designs, This mouse is not too fancy, very minimalist with the Zowie logo on the back and no RGB at all. So for gamers who are looking for an RGB mouse, Zowie might not be the right choice for you.

To shape, Zowie S1 and S2 including mouse ambidextrous. So the left and right have the exact same side, but this mouse only has 2 side button on the left. Maybe, this mouse is only targeted for gamers who use the right hand only.

On the back of the mouse, Zowie S1 and S2 tend to be rounder compared to series FK and ZA inclined sharper. These changes will of course really help the bottom of your wrist so that does not get stuck on the back of the mouse. Therefore, S1 and S2 tend to be more tall compared to series FK and much shorter than ZA, but has long which is shorter when compared to FK and ZA.

And to heavy, Zowie S1 and S2 has the right weight (not too light and not too heavy) with 87 g and 82 g when calculated without the cable.

As reference, I might prefer S2 compared to S1 which tends to be shorter in length and lighter in weight than S1 because i have hand size 18×9.5cm with grip type fingertip and much prefer a small mouse that tends to be light.

And in my opinion personal, this mouse is quite suitable for the standard hand size of several people I have surveyed, namely 18×9 cm. But if in which mouse classification for each grip, maybe I will choose palm mouse for S2 because the mouse is much longer, mouse claw for the S1 due to the much wider mouse dimensions and fingertip mouse for both.

For size details, maybe you can see the list below:

S1 Size: 126 mm x 61 mm x 39 mm (pxWxH)
S1 Size (inches): 4.96″ x 2.4″ x 1.54″
S2 Size: 122 mm x 59 mm x 38 mm (pxWxH)
S2 Size (inches): 4.8″ x 2.32″ x 1.5″
S1 Weight: 87 g (3.1 oz) without cable
S2 Weight: 82 g (2.9 oz) without cable
Cable: 2m, non-braided

Performance

By performance, both of these mice use sensors PixArt PMW3360 already used on mice high-end other. Different than series mouse FK and ZA still using sensors PMW3310. This mouse includes driverless which means we cannotsettings macro button on this mouse. However, for custom dpi and poll rate we can change these settings via the button on the near glide with mouse default settings Zowie that is:

dpi: 400(red)/800(purple)/1600(blue)/3200 dpi(green)
polling rate: 125/500/1000 Hz

The author has tried in the game DOTA and CSGO and did not find some problems in it, some of the settings that the author uses to testing games as follows:

CSGO

Resolution: 1280×960 – right-aligned, full-screen and black bar settings (144hz)
Mouse settings: 1000 hz, 800 dpi, mouse sense in-game 2, mouse windows 6/11

DOTA

Resolution: full-screen, right-aligned (144hz)
Mouse settings: 1000 hz, 800 dpi, mouse windows 6/11

When tried on the game CSGO, both of these mice can capture fast movements very well. The author can flick very easily without worrying about the mouse sensor spinning everywhere and when the setting is changed to 400 dpi+500 hz and mouse sense 1.5, the mouse remains stable and can capture fast movements, especially when the author uses AWP.

To DOTA, no problem at all. When required to use difficult heroes who rely on fast hands like Invoker and Meepo. Both of these mice run fine, this mouse is quite responsive in every movement. However, the author does not recommend buying this mouse just to play dota because it will look “wasteful”.

After talking performance on sensors, let’s talk about performance mouse switches.

Still the same as the other series, these two mice still use Huano Blue Switch which can last up to 20 million clicks. When tried in-game, this mouse has a very consistent click. The author can’t feel missclick at all on every button. But, maybe this mouse will not be suitable for those of you who want a mouse with mouseclick hard one.
