Wow, Take Two Uses DMCA to Takedown Some Popular GTA Mods

GAMEFINITY.ID, Purworejo – Undeniably, mods are one of the things that can make old games still interesting and loved by many gamers. However, I don’t know what Take Two was thinking, the parent company of Rockstar instead issued a DMCA takedown request to remove some popular GTA mods.

In the past week, Take Two has issued takedown orders via DMCA for a number of major GTA mods such as Vice City Overhaul. Another affected mod is GTA: Underground, which this mod combines the GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, Bully and others maps.

Take Two also took down the PC port of the PSP games Vice City Stories and Liberty City Stories. In fact, mod GTA: Liberty City which has been present since 2005 was also affected by the takedown.

“Just to make sure as many people here know, Take-Two has gone heavy with the DMCA this week, first starting with GTAV map mods like GTA3 Portland, Vice City Overhaul, etc,” Ash_735 wrote on GTAForums.

According to the thread on GTAForums, in 2021 Take-Two actually made an agreement which allows modders to modify GTA games as long as they don’t include old content into new games or mod online content.

“[Perjanjian] The original was designed in 2021 and can be summarized as “Don’t port maps/vehicles/content from old GTA games or other video game series to RAGE” and ‘Stay Online, absolutely don’t touch Online or anything related to GTA Online’”.

This agreement came after Take Two’s attempt to make modding on GTA illegal, precisely when the OpenIV mod was hit by a takedown. However, at that time many gamers and media criticized the decision taken by Take Two until this agreement finally emerged.

However, in 2021 Take-Two allegedly changed the terms of the agreement without notifying modders and the GTA community. The changes made add new rules which in addition to not being allowed to port content from old games, modders are also prohibited from making mods such as maps, vehicles, and new missions.

The actions taken by Take Two made many modders angry and disappointed. In fact, some of them have stopped and will not make any more mods for the GTA. Naturally, many of the mods they have developed over the years are simply taken down.

However, behind the controversial Take Two action, many gamers suspect that Rockstar is preparing remastered versions of several old GTA series. Yes, this makes sense considering that there were rumors about this before.
