Sorry, CD Projekt CEO Revealed Cyberpunk 2077 Update Roadmap

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – CD Projekt Red (CDPR) CEO Marcin Iwinski apologized to the public for the troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077, while reiterating his commitment to improving the game. In an apology video published Wednesday (1/13/2021), Iwinski said he and his fellow board members were to blame for the poor quality of the console version of Cyberpunk 2077 when it was released.

The condition was that the game was pulled from the PlayStation Store. The company also allows dissatisfied gamers to receive a refund for the problematic game. CD Projekt is also facing a class action lawsuit that claims the company has misled investors over product quality.

Explaining the gap between the console and PC versions, he said: “Cyberpunk 2077 has a very large scope, it features a lot of special objects, systems and interacting mechanics. In the game, everything is not spread out over flat terrain where we can build things that are less hardware-intensive, but compacted in one big city and in a relatively load-free environment.

“We made it difficult for ourselves by first wanting to make this game look epic on PC, then adapting it to consoles, especially last generation consoles (PS4 and Xbox One). That is our core assumption. It didn’t seem very difficult at first, because we knew the hardware gaps (between PCs and consoles), in the end, time has proven that we have underestimated the problem.”

Iwinski also explained the issue of developing the console version of the game. According to him, the main problem is that games must continue to improve the in-game streaming system for older consoles.

“Streaming is responsible for ‘feeding’ the engine with what you see on the screen, as well as the mechanics of the game. Because the city is so congested and the disk bandwidth of older consoles is what it is, this is something that continues to be a challenge.”

CD Projekt also released a roadmap for future game updates, DLC, and game patches to the game’s next generation consoles. While the company is still planning to release free DLC for the game, the patch to the next generation has been delayed from its initial 2021 release schedule.

“We are still planning on releasing free DLC for this game, as with The Witcher 3. However, we have decided that our priority is to work on the most important fixes and updates. We’ll be releasing free DLC after that. We will talk more about it in the coming months.”

The free DLC will be followed by a next-gen update of the game, which is scheduled for release in the second half of 2021. A new section of the Cyberpunk website also informs players about the continued development of the game. The studio also confirmed that they hope to make the game available again on the PlayStation Store “as soon as possible”.

“The team is working to bring relevant fixes to the game in no time. Avoiding crises on all of our future projects is one of our top priorities.”
