Sony Will Bring PlayStation Games to PC, Starting with Days Gone

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Sony will be bringing a number of PlayStation games to PC, starting with the Days Gone port due for release this spring. According to a recent GQ interview with Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, Jim Ryan, the CEO stated that he had the opportunity to bring PlayStation IP (intellectual property) to a wider audience.

As reported by The Verge, the easier porting process will allow more PlayStation games to be released for PC. Asked why SIE is now starting to “embrace” PCs, Ryan said it was time for his company to make some changes. One of the reasons is the economic factor.

“We are now in early 2021 with our development studio and the games they are making in better shape than ever before. Especially from the second half of the PS4 cycle, our studio made some really good games,” said Ryan.

“There is an opportunity to expose those great games to a wider audience and given the economics of game development. Game creation costs go up with each cycle, as IP quality has improved. Additionally, our ease of making it available to non-console owners has grown. So it was a pretty easy decision for us to make.”

PlayStation got off to a strong start with its first modern PC release, with Horizon Zero Dawn selling 716,000 copies digitally during its August release month, according to Nielsen’s SuperData. Reflecting on PC Horizon’s reception, Jim Ryan told GQ that he’s seen not only the response from PC players, but also the existing PlayStation community.

“We judge in two ways. First, in terms of the immediate success of publishing games on PC, where people love it and they buy it. Second, we also look at the PlayStation community’s perspective on the game. No major adverse reactions. So we will continue to take this step.”

In a company report published last summer, Sony has said it will explore opportunities to bring more PlayStation exclusive games to PC. In addition to Horizon, the formerly PlayStation 4 exclusive Death Stranding and Detroit: Being Human also released for PC last summer.
