Sony Research Finds PS4 Players Playing More Offline Than Online

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Internal research conducted by Sony Interactive Entertainment and distributed to developers in 2021 found that currently there are still many PS4 gamers who spend more time playing offline than online. As quoted from Vice, Sony claims that “single player is growing rapidly”.

Sony also found a lot of players committed to story-based games. This is an opportunity in itself in developing games on the next generation console, the PlayStation 5. Research conducted by Sony also highlights some of the problems players face with single player games. This finding seems to have had an impact on the creation of the PlayStation 5’s new Activity feature.

Sony lists the four main issues players have reported:

  1. Don’t know how long it will take them to reach the in-game goal
  2. The amount of time it took to find the solution in the online help video
  3. How to engage socially without encountering spoilers
  4. Forgetting what they did the last time they played and trying to start again

Sony says the PS5’s Activity feature has been designed to “remove gameplay bottlenecks”. This allows the user to jump straight to a specific level or challenge, suggests how long it will take to complete, and offers instructions on how to continue the game if the player encounters an obstacle, all without leaving the game.
