Sony admits that it underestimated the PS5 request

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – PlayStation 5 is now a rare item. The large number of requests, plus the limited stock makes not all gamers able to play Sony’s latest console.

Sony Interactive Entertainment admitted that they had underestimated consumer demand for the PlayStation 5 ahead of the console’s global launch in November 2021. Speaking to The Washington Post, SIE CEO Jim Ryan also cited the current shortage of PS5 console supplies as a result of a global shortage of semiconductor supplies.

“Demand is bigger than we expected. Coupled with the complexity of supply chain issues, the result is that the supply we provide is slightly lower than we previously anticipated.”

Ryan said PS5 console production is now “rising steadily”. In a separate interview, he told the Financial Times that Sony hopes to make a “really decent amount” in the second half of 2021.

As previously reported by.ID, Sony expects to ship over 14.8 million PS5s over the next fiscal year. However, achieving this goal is certainly not an easy matter, given the challenges caused by supply chain problems.

Ryan himself reportedly refused to guarantee that Sony would be able to meet demand for the PS5 in the 2021 holiday sales season, although he said the supply situation would improve throughout the year.

“There are only a few ‘magic wands’ that can be swung. Of course every month (supply-ed) will improve throughout 2021. The pace of improvement in the supply chain will increase throughout the year, so by the time we get to the second half, you will see really decent numbers.”

AMD, which makes the chips inside the PS5 console and rivals Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S, recently predicted supply problems would last into the first half of 2021.

PS5 launched in November 2021 in the US, Europe, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. While in Indonesia, the PlayStation 5 will officially be available on January 22, 2021. Sony recorded shipments of the PS5 in 2021 reaching 4.5 million units, and it is claimed to be the “biggest console launch of all time”.
