Queen's Review: Rock Tour, Nostalgia of the Legendary Band's Glorious Era

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – It must be admitted, for the generation of the 90s (and below), the British band, Queen, became one of the most phenomenal rock bands ever. The band that existed in the 70s and 80s has indeed succeeded in producing unique, genius songs, and is loved by music lovers of various genres, especially rock.

Even for generations born in the 2000s (and above), it seems that this band is still a favorite. At least some of his songs like We are the Champions and We Will Rock You are definitely often heard. The band’s popularity has also increased after the success of the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody (2021), which brought Freddie Mercury actor Rami Malek to an Oscar (2021).

This year itself marks the 50th anniversary of the band’s existence from London, England. To coincide with that, in early March Gameloft in collaboration with Universal Music Group released the mobile game Queen: Rock Tour. How’s the fun? Check out the following Gamefinity review.

Gameplay (9/10)

As a rhythm game, the gameplay of Queen: Rock Tour is actually relatively simple. Gamers who have played rhythm games such as Guitar Hero or Rock Band must be familiar with the game mechanics.

Players need to press the notes that come down to the screen on separate tracks. Here timing is the key to mastering the game. If the player is late/does not hit the note on time, the song will stop.

Uniquely, each note has a color that represents the four Queen personnel. Green for vocalist Freddie Mercury, blue for guitarist Brian May, pink for drummer Roger Taylor, and orange for bassist John Deacon. So, when a pink note comes out, the player is actually playing Roger Taylor’s drums, and so on.

So if a player misses random green vocal notes between guitar strums (blue notes), Freddie Mercury suddenly stops singing and Queen’s iconic song takes a weird turn. If it is continuous/too frequent, the concert will be canceled and the performer will fail to finish the song.

Each note that is pressed correctly will fill the special move meter. When it’s full, players can use a special move so that the band members will perform their iconic moves, and the audience will give a louder applause/score (3 times) for each note that is successfully tapped during the special move period.

The main mode of this game is World Tour, where players will simulate Queen’s concerts in iconic locations, such as London, Tokyo, to Brazil. Each location will feature about two songs, so there are a total of about 20 legendary Queen songs that can be played in this game.

Besides Tour, there is also a Memories mode which contains galleries and trivia from Queen’s band journey. Players can also try out several tracks on Rehearsal, to customize accessories and equipment for Queen personnel in Band mode. Players also need to complete several Achievements tasks in order to get bonus coins that can be used to buy band accessories.

Graph (9/10)

Queen: Rock Tour uses cute animations that recreate the iconic performances and stage acts of the legendary band Queen. It can be seen from the appearance of the Queen character, such as a combination of LEGO minifigures and Funko Pops.

Smooth animated graphics are supported by an ideal UI look. However, it seems that the players themselves will focus more on the falling notes (faster and denser in the more difficult levels) rather than the animated actions of the Queen members.

Control (8/10)

The control mechanism in this game is also fairly simple. Players only need to tap, swipe and drag according to the notes that fall. The notes will drop on six tracks and players need to tap them when they are in the right position.

If the notes are hit correctly, then the player can hear the sound of applause from the audience. The more applause of course the player’s score will be higher. But like mobile rhythm games in general, the notes that fall are relatively small in size.

With a landscape view, players actually use both thumbs to tap the notes that fall. However, the note size is relatively small, making it difficult for players who have relatively large fingers.

Addictive (9/10)

For fans of Queen, it feels like this game deserves to be called a mandatory game. In addition to reminiscing and romance with Queen’s legendary songs, players can also follow the “summary” of Queen’s tour in its heyday. A number of trivia info and real photo galleries from the band also make playing this game like accessing an encyclopedia about Queen.

Moreover, Queen’s own songs have a kind of earworm, which makes us want to hear the song over and over again. So this game certainly has a good capital so that it can be played continuously.

To be able to access this game in full, players only need to spend Rp. 42,000 to buy the full game. Players will also feel challenged to complete the game at a higher level. The more complete the song, the player can access the next tours and unlock a total of about 20 legendary Queen songs.

Conclusion

Like one of the titles of the legendary song that can be played in this game, “We Will Rock You”, the game Queen: Rock Tour invites the players to “rock” together while reminiscing and feeling the hype of the band’s glorious era in the 70-80s. an. With a smooth graphic display and cute character animations, supported by Queen songs that are pleasant to hear, this game has a good combination to celebrate Queen’s existence for 50 years.

Queen fans will definitely love this game. While lovers of the rhythm genre can also enjoy the challenges of this mobile game. Gmefinity delivers score 8.8 for Queen: Rock Tour.
