Officially Rolling Out, More Than 10 Thousand Young Talents Compete in the 2021 AXIS Menpora Esports Cup

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Coinciding with the 75th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, on Monday 17 August 2021, the national level esports championship specifically for groups of junior high, high school and college students entitled Menpora Esports 2021 AXIS Cup officially started. A total of more than 10 thousand young athletes divided into 2,048 esports teams started competing to defend their respective educational institutions and win titles.

The tournament which was initiated by the Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) was marked by a kick off ceremony by Menpora Zainudin Amali and the Chief Executive of the 2021 Menpora Esports Cup AXIS Giring Ganesha. In line with government recommendations regarding health protocols, the entire series of tournaments will take place online, without physical contact, both athletes and spectators.

Menpora Zainudin Amali explained that the holding of the 2021 AXIS Menpora Esports Cup is part of the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ efforts to develop and advance esports positively in the country. This championship is expected to produce new talents of Indonesian esports athletes who can make the nation proud in the future.

“Since the beginning, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has been committed to supporting esports to develop and bring achievements to Indonesia. When there was a pandemic, I saw that esports was actually getting more and more popular. Therefore, I initiated the idea that there should be an esports competition with the aim of attracting talented young talents,” said Menpora Zainudin Amali in a press conference via the Zoom application after the kick off ceremony, Tuesday (17/8).

The Minister of Youth and Sports added that the government is aware that esports is very popular among young people. Therefore, one of the most important developments in esports at this time is to present structured and tiered competition platforms. Especially now that educational institutions ranging from junior high, high school, to equivalent universities are increasingly open and involved in developing esports in a positive way.

“We are happy that the enthusiasm for the 2021 AXIS Menpora Esports Cup is very positive. There are more than 10 thousand young athletes who compete for the name of their respective schools and campuses. This is what needs to be our common concern so that in the future efforts and cooperation to advance esports can continue to be carried out simultaneously, so as to bring achievements for Indonesia later, “he explained.

On the same occasion, the Chief Executive of the 2021 Menpora Esports Cup, AXIS Giring Ganesha, said that the high interest of the participants strengthened the indication that esports is still popular and increasingly popular in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. This strengthens his belief and the Indonesia Esports Premiere League (IESPL) as a partner of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in organizing this tournament so that it will be successful and bring benefits to the progress of Indonesian esports.

“The 2021 AXIS Menpora Esports Cup is designed to be a competition platform for our young esports talents so that they can develop and then become pro athletes who excel in the future. We see the potential of our athletes is extraordinary and the industry is growing positively, so through this championship we want how esports can also be
bring Indonesia’s glory,” Giring explained.

He also explained that since registration opened on August 1, in just over a week, the target quota of 2,048 teams has been achieved. Each team consists of 5 athletes, which means there are more than 10 thousand athletes competing in this tournament. Many of the participants came from a number of well-known universities and schools from various regions throughout Indonesia.

Some of them came from Padjajaran University (Unpad) West Java, University of Indonesia (UI) Jakarta, Riau University (UNRI) Riau, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) East Java, Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Yogyakarta, Lhowseumawe State Polytechnic – Nanggroe Aceh Darusallam, Halu Oleo University – Southeast Sulawesi, Udayana University – Bali, Sriwijaya University – South Sumatra, to Nusa Nipa Maumere University – NTT.

“One of the important points that became our record in the 2021 AXIS Menpora Esports Cup is that there are so many participants who come from remote areas in Indonesia, not only from big cities. This indicates that our esports activists and fans are very large and evenly distributed. This is a potential that we must continue to explore and develop in the future,” he added.
