Marvel Announces First LGBTQ Captain America, Aaron Fischer

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Marvel Comics introduces Aaron Fischer, a gay teenager who will play Captain America. This year Marvel Comics is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the American hero character.

As part of the celebration, they launched a new comic series, The United States of Captain America. Steve Rogers, who has been known as Captain America, teamed up with other former Captain America when his shield was lost.

The heroes will travel overland across the US to find the shield, and will meet people from “all walks of life” who have taken on the role of Captain America to defend their communities.

Aaron Fischer, a gay teenager, will be the first to be introduced in the limited series released in June. Aaron Fischer is billed as a teenager who “represents the oppressed, and the forgotten” and will be the first LGBTQ+ character to take on the role of Captain America.

Marvel describes Fischer as the “Captain America of the Railways”, a “brave teenager whose role is to protect his fellow people on the run and the homeless”. Its debut time will coincide with Pride Month in the US, June.

“Aaron is inspired by the heroes of the queer community: activists, leaders, and ordinary people who make life better,” says series writer Josh Trujillo. “He represents the oppressed, and the forgotten. I hope his debut story resonates with readers, to inspire the next generation of heroes.”

Artist Jan Bazaldua, the creator of Fischer’s characters, said he “really enjoyed” his work. Jan Bazaldua himself is a transgender person.

“As a transgender person, I love being able to feature a gay man who admires Captain America and fights crime to help those who are barely visible to society,” said Bazaldua.

“When I drew it, I thought, Cap is fighting super powerful beings and almost always saving the world. But Aaron helps those who walk alone on the road with the problems they face every day.”

For your information, in the 1980s Marvel had a “No gays in the Marvel Universe” policy. While in the 1990s, they put an “Adults Only” label on every comic featuring LGBTQ+ characters, in response to protests by conservatives.

Meanwhile, Aaron Fischer himself is not Marvel’s first gay character. He is the X-Men character Northstar of the Canadian superhero team Alpha Flight created by John Byrne in 1979. But his sexual orientation was never revealed until 1992.

In recent years, Marvel has indeed moved to diversify its superhero cast. Hulkling and Wiccan from Young Avengers were known to be dating in 2010. In 2012 Northstar finally married his longtime partner in the first same-sex marriage in the Marvel universe.

In 2021, Iceman, a member of the original X-Men created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963, revealed himself as gay. Meanwhile, Marvel’s rival DC Comics has also created a same-sex marriage between Apollo and Midnighter, who married in the 2002 series The Authority.
