Limited Stock, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Sales in Japan Lose to Predecessor

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Sales of the next generation of consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in Japan failed to beat the records of their predecessors. This is because the stock of consoles in the region is very limited. As Famitsu reports, the PS5 sold about 118,000 units during its launch week (four days), while the Xbox Series X/S sold about 21,000 units (six days).

In comparison, the PlayStation 4 debuted in Japan with sales of 322,000 units and the Xbox One around 24,000 units. Only the PS3, which also had very limited launch stock at its debut, had a lower sales record than the PS5. Meanwhile, no Xbox has sold less at launch than the Series X/S.

  • PS2 – 631 thousand
  • PS4 – 322K
  • Xbox – 124K
  • PS5 – 118 thousand
  • PS3 – 88 thousand
  • Xbox 360 – 62 thousand
  • Xbox One – 24k
  • Xbox Series X/S – 21K

As previously reported by GAMEFINITY.ID, Sony claims that the PS5 sales stock in Japan has sold out, aka sold out even before the launch day was held on 12 November. It is likely that sales of the next generation console will be more if there is additional stock.

The situation in Japan is similar to the Xbox Series X/S sales in the UK last week. Supply issues are expected to continue for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 this year, as the COVID-19 pandemic has hampered shipments. Earlier this week, a Microsoft executive said the company expected the Xbox Series X/S supply shortage to continue through April 2021.
