Fans Take Advantage of Nintendo Leaks to Remastered Super Mario World Soundtrack
GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – A group of Nintendo fans have managed to recover the 30-year-old Super Mario World soundtrack, using samples found in the “’Gigaleak” data leak that Nintendo experienced last year. Twitter user The Brickster said he could use Nintendo classic data that leaked last year to solve the mystery of which samples were used for Koji Kondo’s iconic Mario music.
Other creators can then recover some songs from the Mario World OST and share them online. To restore the legendary song, the creators used the Super Mario Advanced (GBA) source code found in Gigaleak. The game reuses the original sample from Super Mario World which was released on the SNES in 1990.
“The sample had a name we didn’t have, and that’s how we were able to find it. To clarify once again, this restore was NOT made by me. This was made by my friends, who allowed me to share the track on my channel, for all to hear. I just came across a lead that directed us to find a sample. Per credit the song is in the description.”
Although the remastered tracks are technically derived from the original SNES music, some of the remastered parts sound like they’re missing some of the original composer’s notes.
Super Mario World itself isn’t the first game to have the OST remade in this way. In 2021, composer Sam Miller was able to recover music from the game Donkey Kong Country by discovering the original sound used by composer David Wise.
Last year, huge amounts of data on Nintendo classics leaked onto the internet or what Nintendo called “Gigaleak”. Some of the data that was leaked included early prototypes for games such as Yoshi’s Island, Star Fox, Super Mario 64 and Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which later went viral online.
The breach of old Nintendo data was first reported in May. Early prototypes of Super Mario Kart and Super Mario World 2 (Yoshi’s Island) appeared as part of the leak. Likewise with some early artwork from Super Mario World and others.
