DOTA: Dragons Blood Failed To Show What Makes DOTA 2 Special
GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Netflix series DOTA: Dragon’s Blood premiered on Thursday (25/3/2021). According to a review from The Verge, the collaboration series from Netflix and Valve is indeed interesting to watch, although it fails to show what makes the world of DOTA so special.
“DOTA: Dragon’s Blood is a fun, albeit short, fantasy series that can be enjoyed even if you haven’t played DOTA. Unfortunately, this series explains very little about what makes the world of DOTA interesting,” commented Andrew Webster of The Verge.
DOTA: Dragon’s Blood is indeed adapted from Valve’s DOTA 2 video game franchise. The series, which has a total of 8 episodes, tells the story of Davion, a Dragon Knight who wants to wipe out The Scourge from the face of the earth.
After meeting the powerful ancient race Eldwurm and Princess Mirana who has a secret mission of her own, Davion becomes involved in an extraordinary adventure that he never imagined before.
Criticism targets the discussion of the plot which is considered to be lacking in detail. This is considered to obscure the character’s motivation to carry out his mission as told in the series.
“It’s hard to just describe the plot: there are people trying to stop the war, but some key elements – like the magic flower that makes the character risk his life – are never really explained. It’s almost never clear why things that are considered important actually matter.”
Even so, DOTA: Dragons Blood is indeed recognized as having an interesting action show to enjoy. For your information, the animation of DOTA: Dragons Blood was handled by Studio Mir, previously known for his work The Legend of Korra. Although some parts of the action are considered too gore and a lot of blood, the graphics displayed in the series do look fast and fluid.
“With lots of cool special powers and dangerous looking dragons. You don’t need to understand DOTA to enjoy a well-choreographed battle between the strongest knight and the dragon he’s been hunting for decades.”
Even though it’s good to watch, DOTA: Dragons Blood is considered to be lacking in developing its characters or the world fully. Even though the audience of this anime itself is not only loyal fans of DOTA, but new viewers who may not even know the game DOTA at all.
“What makes the world of DOTA 2 interesting? As someone who’s watched the series but hasn’t played the game, I can’t tell you. After eight episodes, I can’t say that I’m more interested in playing the game DOTA 2 than ever before.”
Dragon’s Blood is considered to be enjoyed by viewers who already have a lot of knowledge about the DOTA franchise. Unfortunately, this series does not inspire viewers who are not familiar with the world of DOTA to dig deeper.
