Acquired by Epic Games, Mediatonic Wants to Bring Some Fortnite Features to Fall Guys
GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Epic Games has acquired Tonic Games Group, the parent company of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout developer studio Mediatonic. In the release, Epic said “Fall Guys’ gameplay will not change” and the studio’s new owners will continue to support the game across platforms.
Epic did not reveal how much money was spent to acquire Mediatonic. This agreement was welcomed by both parties. Both Epic and Tonic claim to have the same view regarding how to develop the game world.
“It’s no secret that Epic invested in building the metaverse and Tonic Games share the same goal. As Epic works to build this virtual future, we need great creative talent who knows how to create great games, content and experiences,” said Epic Founder and CEO, Tim Sweeney.
“At Tonic Games Group, we often say that everyone deserves the games we think they are made for.’ With Epic, we feel like we’ve found a home made for us,” said Tonic Games co-founder and CEO Dave Bailey.
On a separate occasion, Mediatonic confirmed that the Steam version of Fall Guys will still be available for purchase and get updates in the future. The developer also said it wanted to bring some of the features offered in the Epic, Fortnite and Rocket League games to Fall Guys.
“Fortnite and Rocket League already have a lot of features that we want to bring to Fall Guys. For example, the account system, cross-play, squad vs squad mode, and others. We will work hard to bring more of these features to Fall Guys!”
Mediatonic also throws in code regarding the potential to adopt a free-to-play model like the Epic game. However, there are currently no other announcements that can be revealed.
Fall Guys released for Steam and PS4 in August 2021, with the console version available free to PlayStation Plus members that month. The game quickly became the most downloaded PS Plus game of all time and has sold more than 11 million copies on PC, according to Mediatonic.
In February, Tonic also announced that it would be bringing the chaotic battle royale game to Nintendo Switch and Xbox this summer. Fall Guys Season 3, Winter Knockout, launched in December, introducing seven new chapters, new obstacles, and dozens of costumes.
The mid-season update arrived in late January, adding new levels, 40 variations to the existing course, plus new DLC and costumes. Mediatonic recently confirmed Fall Guys Season 4 will launch “soon”, while confirming the game will be further developed and has a bright future.
