Sony Denies Working on God of War

Sony recently confirmed that they don’t have a God of War movie or TV show in the works.

The New York Times shared a quote from a Sony spokesperson regarding the long-rumored God of War film, emphatically denying that the company is working on a game-to-feature adaptation of the action-adventure franchise.

Contrary to speculation, one that isn’t, at least not anytime soon, according to a Sony: God of War spokesperson, “he said.

The idea for a God of War movie has been around since 2005, but nothing has materialized. Rumors of a potential big screen adaptation of the game rocked again after the launch of God of War 2021, where Kratos turned into a father, a warrior, fighting both on the field and in his own heart over how to treat his son.

Meanwhile, there are probably 10 other video game adaptations that can be said to be in Sony Pictures. Towards the end of last year, Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra revealed that the studio was busy working on several adaptations, including seven TV shows and three films based on PlayStation properties.

One of them is Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. The film is slated for release in theaters on February 18, 2022. Holland will play a young Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan, who may or may not wear a mustache in the film.

Sony is also starting production on The Last of Us, a series headed for HBO that promises to “uplift” the popular PlayStation game Naughty Dog by expanding on the source material, rather than scrapping everything that came before it. HBO officially gave the green light for the project last November and it will probably go live in 2022.
