Sega Comments On Virtua Fighter Series Future Plans

Compared to Street Fighter and Tekken, the Virtua Fighter series has not achieved the same level of success, despite being a pioneer of 3D fighting games at the same time.

As such, fans have been expecting a new entry in the series for years. And with Sega appearing to revive the brand with the release of Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown, an enhanced remake of the last entry, it looks like the series is really coming back.

Unfortunately, it looks like Sega hasn’t determined any real plans for the future of the Virtua Fighter Series.

In an interview with Famitsu, and translated by Siliconera, chief producer Seiji Aoki talked about the release of the remake and the future of the Virtua Fighter series.

According to him, currently nothing has been decided about the potential for Virtua Fighter 6, although Aoki himself admits that he wants to make it happen.

Meanwhile, existing fans may immediately like the new game, and Sega most likely thought it would be safer to re-release Virtua Fighter 5 first to gauge interest in the series before committing to a new project.

So far, at least Sega wants to try and make Ultimate Showdown a success. The game was first teased as part of the Virtua Fighter Esports project, which means Sega is trying to get its game into the ever-growing competitive scene.

How successful it is can also be a factor in whether Virtua Fighter 6 will actually materialize or not. I don’t know, only time will tell.

Meanwhile, Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown is currently being released for free by Sony exclusively for PlayStation Plus subscribers in June.

Making a new release free in any capacity on the day it was released was a surprising move and showed that Sega wanted to get as many players into the game as possible.

In the interview also Aoki said that at the beginning of development he did not think this game could be free, although he pointed out that being a free game permanently would be difficult for business growth.

That’s why Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown will only be free on PS Plus for the next two months.

Besides that, Sega itself seems to be looking into which classic IPs can receive a remake or reboot, with a few options including Nights, Jet Set Radio, and Crazy Taxi.

Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown is available for the PlayStation 4 platform.
