PUBG Game Not So Haram
The PUBG Mobile Game Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds is currently in the spotlight and controversy in Indonesia due to the proposed banning of the PUBG Game in several countries including Malaysia and India following the brutal shootings by terrorists at two New Zealand mosques. This online-based game is said to be an inspiration for terrorists to carry out their actions.
The controversy over the illegality of the PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) game made by the MUI (Indonesian Ulema Council) is still in the stage of study and discussion with the Kominfo. One of the reasons why MUI is considering banning the PUBG Mobile Game is because of the elements of violent content in it where there is the use of firearms and explosives. MUI is worried that the content presented by the game could inspire someone to carry out acts of terror in real life later. So is PUBG Mobile Haram?
The proposed MUI Haram fatwa against the PUBG game drew protests from Indonesian gamers and the e-sports Association. Moreover, in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, e-sports games have started to be included in the trial event in the biggest major sporting event in the world. Many parties support the discourse of the haram fatwa, but not a few also reject the PUBG game fatwa. One of them is the e-sports Association, where they say the PUBG game is more focused on strategy and teamwork than violence.
The controversy over the PUBG Mobile Game is currently the government’s attention and plans to make restrictions on playing PUBG. So far, the circulation of online games in Indonesia has been regulated in the Regulation of the Minister of Communication and Information (Permen) Number 11 of 2021 concerning the Classification of Electronic Interactive Games. However, the IGRS (Internet Game Rating Indonesia) Regulation is not yet complete regarding the limitation of playing time.
To decide this, his party admitted that they would hold another meeting to discuss in more detail. Later, if there is a need for additional regulations, it is not impossible that the government will change the IGRS Ministerial Regulation.
Then, how are the results of the MUI meeting with the Kominfo, Kemenpora, Esports, KPAI and other institutions discussing the fatwa discourse for the PUBG game?
The result is, the phenomenon of games that contain elements of violence including PUBG needs to be considered, starting from the user’s age limit to the duration of playing time and supervision by parents. Where the PUBG game is included in the 18+ games category, meaning that it can only be played by people aged 18 years and over. In addition, there are several notes that were also produced, where the game as a cultural product has both negative and positive sides.
For this reason, it is necessary to optimize the positive side of the game, one of which is to create a channel through e-Sports which optimizes the benefits and minimizes the negative impact of the game. Finally, the fatwa is haram against the PUBG game not being ejected but will continue to be monitored and studied more deeply later.
