EU LCS 2021 Follow the NA LCS Format
Major changes will occur in 2021 in the EU SCS. Riot Games released the latest news that the 2021 EU LCS follows the franchise-style NA LCS format. The implementation of this model was carried out on the EU LCS after the organizers saw that the NA LCS had successfully implemented it in 2021. The cooperation contract of this model will last for a period of 3 years. Teams that agree to participate in the EU LCS are subject to the risk of being expelled from the franchise if they have poor performance and or there are disciplinary problems.
EU LCS 2021 Follow the NA LCS Format
After issuing an announcement that the 2021 EU LCS will follow the NA LCS format, Riot Games as the organizer will start the registration opening for teams that want to take part in the European League of Legends Championship Series (EU LCS). Participation payments are priced at a lower cost when compared to NA LCS. For teams that already have squad members to navigate the EU LCS, the team is priced at 8 million euros. If the team does not have a squad member, then a fee of 10.5 million euros will be charged.
The price in the NA LCS itself is set at USD 10 million for existing squad members, and USD 13 for teams that do not have one. The implementation of this franchise model has a positive economic impact for NA LCS with an increase in profit of USD140-200 million.
There are several franchise stages for the EU LCS, exactly 3 stages which will take place from now until December 2021. These three stages apply to all teams that were previously EU LCS participants and also those who are later interested in participating in the EU LCS.
The first stage of the franchise selection is an examination of the participation application in the form of financial data, prospect plans, business background, and team brand. Applications that pass the officer selection in the first stage will enter the second and then third stage of application selection which will be assessed by representatives from Riot Gmaes in Berlin in July to September 2021. After the assessment, from October to December, Riot will then select and issue announcements teams that are eligible to participate in the 2021 EU LCS.
The application of the franchise system to the NA LCS and EU LCS is due to this system having many economic benefits. The franchise system is able to increase the quantity of the money pool distributed to Riot Games, players and teams in the EU LCS. The money in the pool comes from sponsorship as well as media rights for the EU LCS show.
It is said that, with the franchise system in the EU LCS, players will get 35% of the total pool revenue. The remaining 65% is divided in half for league expenses by Riot Games and also for teams according to the achievements of each team in the EU LCS competition.
The change to the franchise model helped increase the pool which saw Riot increase the minimum player salary from USD29,791 to USD74,749. In addition to the benefits, there are drawbacks to this model in the form of team disbandment, which can occur when the EU LCS 2021 participating team is unable to pay the participation fee. This incident has happened to Immortals who previously competed in the NA LCS.
The application of this franchise model will not end in the EU LCS eSports competition only. It is reported that Riot will slowly start implementing it in each region, Indonesia is no exception, which will soon be tasting it. What do you think about this franchise model? Is this model suitable to be applied in all regions or not?
