Aceh Ulama Issue Haram Fatwa for PUBG

Telset.id, Jakarta – The Aceh Ulema Council issued haram fatwa for games PlayerUnknows Battlegrounds (PUBG). In addition, the haram fatwa will also apply to games similar to PUBG which contains elements of violence.

Reported Telset.id from AsiaOne on Thursday (20/06/2021), the fatwa was issued last Wednesday. They were surprised to see the increasing popularity of PUBG among the Acehnese, who are mostly Muslim.

“We have seen that children and even adults in Aceh are getting addicted games PUBG and they play it everywhere via their mobiles. This has started to worry me,” said Deputy Aceh Ulema Council, Faisal Ali.

Acehnese scholars also conducted a study. As a result, they stated that PUBG is haram because it insults Islam and makes players addicted to violence.

In addition, they also saw many other countries such as India, Nepal and Iraq that blocked PUBG because it contained violence. Acehnese scholars also hope that the Aceh provincial government will consider the fatwa.

“Our fatwa says that PUBG and other similar games are haram (forbidden) because they can incite violence and change people’s behavior. It also insults Islam,” said Faisal Ali, deputy chairman of the Aceh Ulema Council.

The illicit fatwa regarding PUBG had previously been crowded in last March. At that time the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) said it would review PUBG. MUI will consider whether to issue a haram fatwa or not, because games is deemed to have caused harm or adverse impact.

Secretary of the MUI Fatwa Commission Asrorun Niam Sholeh explained that at the meeting there were several inputs from the Ministry of Communications and Informatics, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), the Indonesian e-Sports Association, psychologists, to the Presidential Staff Office.
