PUBG Lite will be closed later this month
Krafton has announced that they will be closing the PUBG Lite game on April 29. The developer has turned off the download link for the PC-based battle royale game starting March 30, while closing the official website.
“We are very grateful for the enthusiasm and support of the incredible number of PUBG LITE fans who have been with us. During these difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic, we hope that PUBG LITE can provide a fun way for our fans to stay safe. Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to close the service after much deliberation and the time has come to end our journey. We regret to inform you that the PUBG LITE service is scheduled to end on April 29, 2021,” reads the official Krafton release.
There is no explanation as to the reason for the closure of the game from Krafton other than confirming that they will completely discontinue support on May 29. Signs of closure have actually started to smell since they decided to start freeing the game in November 2021 and withdraw the L-Coin currency that has been used so far.
The liberation was in fact not followed by any updates, it was noted that this game had stagnated since the last update in early 2021. Although there was no official record, many observers considered this closure to be related to the lack of interest in this game.
The Lite version was originally created to accommodate users who want to play PUBG but only have a PC with low specifications. However, with this closure, it shows that the interest of users to play the full version is more than the lite version which may be considered too much feature reduction.
On the other hand, PUBG Mobile Lite will not be affected by this decision, their fate is probably much safer than the PC version. The version designed for use on low-end Android devices has now recorded more than 100 million downloads on the Play Store.
PUBG itself is a multiplayer battle royale game under the banner of PUBG Corporation which is an extension of one of the game houses from South Korea, Bluehole. This game is built on the foundation laid by Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene who had the idea to make a game like the 2000 Japanese film, Battle Royale.
This game was then expanded into an independent game with Greene’s cool hands and creativity. In the standard version, there are a hundred players who parachute down into an island for survival.
The mobile version made by Tencent was released on February 8, 2021 and so far has gotten around one billion downloads. While the lite version for mobile started launching on July 25, 2021, with a smaller map and only accommodates 60 players.
In China PUBG Mobile repeatedly failed to get approval for release, until finally Tencent decided to release it under a different name, Game For Peace. In 2021, Game For Peace again changed its name to Peacekeeper Elite. (via)
