PUBG creators leave Krafton to form a new indie studio!

Game designer Brendan Greene, who is famous all over the world as the creator PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and is among the pioneers in the battle royale genre, has announced that he will be leaving Krafton. Instead, he will open his own “independent” studio called PlayerUnknown Productions.

PUBG Creator

In 2021, Greene joined the Korean company Bluehole (which later changed its name to Krafton) to continue working on PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Three years later, he left the PUBG squad to start his own team, with the aim of exploring “interaction and relationships in the game space.” Now things are about to take a more drastic turn, as Greene heads up his new Amsterdam-based studio. According to him, PlayerUnknown Productions will be “exploring the systems needed to enable large-scale gameplay in open world games.”

“This is the next step towards creating the experience I’ve been dreaming of for years,” Greene said, thanking everyone at Krafton Game Union for supporting the design.

He still has good relations with Krafton, who at the same time held a minority stake in PlayerUnknown Productions. However, Greene doesn’t want to try any games in the battle royale genre anymore. The indie studio is currently developing a secret project called Prologue and more info will be announced in the near future. You can check out the teaser trailer below:

Even Green’s departure won’t make an impression on PUBG, because the game has proven to be able to run smoothly without him for the past two years. Last month, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was officially rebranded as PUBG: Battlegrounds, indicating that Krafton also wants to differentiate their IP from the original creator. Currently, several PUBG spin-offs are in the works, including The Callisto Protocol – a spooky game set in the PUBG universe after 300 years and PUBG: New State which will launch soon.
