Gigabyte Saber 15 P45W Review – The Most Understated GTX 1060 Gaming Laptop
Initially, we thought that the Gigabyte Saber 15 or the Gigabyte P45 series were only positioned for the GTX 1050 market. In fact, it was also released in the GTX 1060 version. Then, we also assumed, this is the Saber Pro version, Or SaberPro. But apparently, what was present on pemmzchannel was a Saber 15 with the same chassis as the previous GTX 1050 version. Gigabyte deliberately suppressed production cost Gigabyte Saber 15 P45W by just replacing the GPU chip? Has this strategy succeeded in repeating the success that the Saber 15 GTX 1050 2GB version has achieved? Instead of being curious, let’s review it further.
Gigabyte Saber 15 P45W Specifications and Prices
For the CPU or processor, the Gigabyte Saber 15 P45W still relies on the Intel Core i7 7700HQ. However, somewhat different from other GTX 1060 laptops that directly offer 6GB VRAM, the GTX 1060 on the Saber 15 P45W, only offers 3GB VRAM. Hmm.. this is an indication of pursuing value again?
For RAM, Gigabyte chooses to stick only one chip RAM 8GB DDR4 pc 2400MHz to give the user the freedom to do upgrade up to 2 fully available slots. To storage system, he relies on M.2 SATA SSD 128GB. As for DATA, using HDD 1TB 7200 which is quite rare to find on laptops in its current class. For wireless connections, it relies on a chipset adapter Intel Pro Wireless dual band 3165 which also integrates a dual mode bluetooth 4.2 adapter. The first difference we encountered was, this 1060 version uses bigger battery that is 62wh, where the 1050 series uses 47wh. Hmm… what else? Oh yes, for the LCD, it still uses the same panel as the P45K GTX 1050 version.
Same Design & Chassis Material
For the chassis used, we make sure the dimensions, design and materials are exactly the same. Even down to the finishing and colors used. Well, for the weight, our scales show that it has the same weight as the 1050 version, which is 2.5 kg. In fact, it uses a larger battery. In theory, the cooling system section uses the same configuration. Wow, this is really reckless. We’ll check it out later. But, first we want Flash back a little at the same time reviewing the design side that we didn’t have time to review when reviewing the GTX 1050 series.
Chassis design on this Gigabyte Saber 15 P45W, originally had a concept design which stylish and a little effective heavy muscles. Unlike most gaming laptops that play with firm abstract lines on the surface, the Saber 15 tries to present real curved silhouettes. This, if we look closely, makes it present a sturdy and rigid impression. Unfortunately, this sturdy impression is not at all supported by the quality of the material chassis predominantly plastic.
The negative effects of using plastic materials are mostly suffered by the LCD cover. The flex is starting to be felt from the center area near the Gigabyte logo, all the way to the bottom edge. For the area where the front and inner LCD covers meet, we found a lot missing plaque. Finishing matte black really makes it dull very quickly with so many fingerprints that it takes a bit of work to clean. Where else, for the Saber 15 sales package, he doesn’t have cloth micro-fiber such as the Gigabyte Aero and Aorus laptop series. The rest, you can see our review of the design in the video review of the Gigabyte Saber 15 version of the GTX 1050 in the video below.
Keyboard & Touchpad
It is common knowledge that the barebones used by the Saber 15 are made by Clevo. And those who are familiar with barebones Clevo, must have understood the weakness in painting which is easy to fade, especially in the palmrest area and the oily impression that often occurs on the surface of the keyboard keys. Well, the new RGB keyboard board used by the Saber 15 uses a design and finishing that is much different from the previous version of the Clevo notebook. Starting from the dimensions, height, finishing down to the font used, in our opinion is a significant improvement.
The gap between the keys and key-travel which reaches 2mm, almost proportionally supports the image of the Saber 15 as a gaming laptop. Unfortunately, the feedback given by the Saber 15 keyboard keys we think tends to be soft, lacking tactile. The surface of the keys that are given a solid black color and combined with the concept of a transparent keycap edge, makes the appearance of the Saber 15 keyboard similar to the Steelseries keyboard used by MSI. It’s just different in the selection of fonts and transparency on the Steelseries which is a bit doff.
Display Panel
The hardware offered is also the same, namely the LG-Philips 15. A 15-inch IPS panel with 1080p 60Hz resolution, which offers excellent viewing angles. In the heyday of Saber 15 1050, the brightness quality offered by this panel was very attractive. But now, where many other vendors are starting to improve the quality of their gaming laptop screens, Gigabyte is sticking with its offer. This makes the overall value of the quality of the Gigabyte Saber 15 P45W LCD, down below the quality of some similar products.
I/O Port
Another positive thing that is characteristic of the barebones made by Clevo is the strength in the completeness of the I / O port. 3 USB 3.1 Type A ports and a USB 3.1 Type C gen 2 10gbps, guaranteed to pamper users who have gadgets as gambreng. The Saber 15 P45W also offers a unique display-out alternative. If you notice, there are 2 mini DisplayPort on the left side. One of these mini DisplayPorts is the output of Intel HD (DP V1.2), so only a mini DisplayPort (DP V1.3) is the output of the Nvidia chip. And has been marked with the letter “D” as a differentiator.
Gigabyte is quite manly to highlight the multi-display capabilities of the Gigabyte Saber. They claim, users can use a 1+3 external monitor. One is meant for the built-in LCD, and the other 3 are external monitors. To be sure, HDMI will handle 1 output, while the Mini DisplayPort 1.3 handles 2 outputs with the ability to draw up to 5K 60Hz resolution. In theory this should be true, unfortunately our lab does not yet have a bad test for such a sophisticated monitor.
Performance
Through the procession of standard benchmarks that we did, some of the latest direct-X-based synthetic benchmarks showed, 6GB VRAM did not help much to raise the score. This can be interpreted, for most applications that run 3D scenarios that are not too complex, do not or do not require abundant VRAM capacity. The gap is only around 2 to 3%. Entering 3D simulations, both games and renderings that require much more complex 3D scenarios, the gap is getting wider, reaching 15% depending on the complexity of the scene being run. The rest, please see the video review below.
As we know, 3GB VRAM will start to suffer when invited to play open world games that “by default” require the GPU to render objects and landscapes around the player. Other than that, we can rest assured that, the GTX 1060 3GB is still much better than the GTX 1050 Ti 4GB.
Cooling System
Regarding the weight, there is something interesting, friend. For the Gigabyte Saber 15 P45W, the cooling system has been improved. From the original single heatpipe per component, to dual heatpipes. Looking at the physical cooling system of the Saber 15 P45W, it seems that Gigabyte still doesn’t want heat between the CPU and GPU interacting with each other. Something really good. It’s just that, the heat loop that passes in the heatpipe, not as long as the cooling system design that makes the heatpipe stretch from the CPU to the GPU.
For the fan used, the size is quite large. and from db noise that is heard, the speed is allegedly translucent 6000rpm. We tested a new method to measure the heat dissipation capability of the Gigabyte Saber 15 P45W cooling system. First we make the CPU and GPU work full load. Then, once we get the full load temperature, we make all computations stop or idle. Then we noted how quickly the P45W’s pending system worked to dissipate heat. As a result, the Gigabyte P45W cooling system is able to dissipate as much as 20’C of heat on each active component, in about 25 seconds.
Without an active turbo fan, the CPU temperature looks quite high reaching 88’C. However, the condition of the GPU is more worrying because it reaches 93’C. With sufficient noise consequences annoyingWe make sure the cooling system on the Gigabyte Saber 15 P45W is still capable enough to push the heat out so it doesn’t warm the area. upper-case. In fact, we quite supraise the area palm rest on the left where the user’s hand rests while using the keyboard, it just feels cool. As far as we remember, this is one of the coldest of all 15-inch gaming laptops we’ve reviewed.
While using the turbo fan mode, the CPU temperature was successfully held at a maximum number of 73’C. As for the GPU, it managed to hold it at 79’C, which means it’s not much different from the Asus ROG Strix GL503VD Hero Edition which we also tested recently. In fact, the 503VD uses an inferior GPU, the GTX 1050.
Conclusion
We have to admit, cosmetically, this Saber P45W still needs to be improved. Material especially, also Quality Control for process chassis assembly at certain points. And we are also quite worried about the design exhaust cooling system who have not received a position fix. Although actually as long as we are reviewing the Saber 15 series, the position exhaust on the right is not too bothersome because it can be handled with various alternatives. For example, slightly move the mouse position or use a height mat. However, it is undeniable that this has caused quite a number of complaints. And our concern is, this is used as a point to make a choice on other brand products.

Overall, the gigabyte Saber P45W is not the first choice for those who want a product with high cosmetic value and handling. But for those looking for price to performanceIn our opinion, the Gigabyte Saber 14 P45W will succeed in duplicating the success of their 1050 series which had hit some time ago.
The price we offer is 16.799 million, a bit different in terms of the sales package. At Pemmz, this price does not include gaming gear from Logitech, however, we replaced it with a more useful one, Original Windows 10 Home Edition. FYI, this free original Windows 10 is worth 950 thousand rupiah. For a gaming mouse, you still get it as an added bonus. So how? Interested?
