Prone to Political Issues, Iraq War Themed Game Six Days in Fallujah Ready to Release 2021

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – After years of not being in the spotlight, the long-developed PC and console game, Six Days in Fallujah is set to be released this year. The game set in the Iraq War, specifically the Second Battle of Fallujah which took place in 2004, is considered prone to swaying opinions and political issues.

Six Days in Fallujah publisher Victure insists it is not trying to make “political commentary” regarding the Iraq War with the upcoming game. This game itself does tell the perspective of American troops fighting the Iraqi Rebels, as well as the perspective of members of the city’s civilian population.

The gameplay of this FPS game will be 90 percent action, with the other 10 percent telling a parallel storyline in which players take on the role of an unarmed Iraqi resident, trying to get his family out of the city.

“For us as a team, it’s really about helping players understand the complexities of urban combat,” Victure CEO Peter Tamte said in an interview with Polygon.

“It’s about individual experiences that are now there because of political decisions. And we want to show how the choices that policymakers make affect the choices that (a Marine) needs to make on the battlefield.

“Just as (the Marines) can’t second-guess policymakers’ choices, we’re not trying to make political comments about whether war itself is a good or bad idea.”

The more than 100 Iraqi marines, soldiers and civilians who were present during the Second Battle of Fallujah are said to have shared their personal stories, photos and video footage with the game’s development team.

While the game will tell the stories through the original documentary interview footage, Tamte said Six Days in Fallujah does not include stories about the use of white phosphorus and uranium by US troops.

“There are things that divide us, distract people from the stories of people we can identify with. I don’t want sensationalism to distract from those parts of the experience.”

Six Days in Fallujah was originally slated to be published by Konami more than a decade ago, but the publisher pulled out in 2009 due to the controversial nature of the game’s themes. The Iraq war, however, has always been controversial and has drawn criticism, including from military veterans and anti-war groups.

“Almost all the anger I hear comes from people who are not in Fallujah. From the experiences and conversations I’ve had for over 15 years with the people on this project, almost everyone wants to know what’s going on in Fallujah.”
