ASUS ROG G46VW Review: Most “Portable” ROG Notebook Ever . .

G46VW Illustration

This April, the world of mobile computer gaming in Indonesia has a new product from the ASUS ROG family. This new product before being launched has already spread its appeal via previews on the Internet. He is the smallest choice of the entire family of ROG Notebook series, yes ASUS ROG G46VW. From the code name, we can immediately guess how big the LCD is in the notebook with the Geforce GTX660M mainstream VGA card.

OVERVIEW

Unboxing
Unboxing Moment

The sales package and packaging design of the ASUS G46VW is very simple. Similar to the types of ASUS A series or K Series notebooks. Only the outer box packaging makes the difference. And when compared to other ASUS ROG notebook packaging boxes, the design is totally different. It can be seen in the photo, there is only an Adapter (180 Watt), Power Cable, Manual Book, Warranty Card, there is a remark note for battery use. What stands out is indeed the capacity of the adapter, for a 14″ notebook class, 180 watts of power is very, very super. And what deserves another thumbs up is, the size of the adapter is quite small.

DESIGN

Design

The G46VW still carries the ROG series aura. The body shape is angular in some parts, especially the edges, similar to the G55 and G75 series. Plastic material on the LCD panel and the bottom case are covered with dove material which minimizes scratches. Meanwhile, the Upper Case is made of aluminum type metal material to support the “Ice Cool” feature in the Palm Rest area. And this really keeps the hand from being stung by the component heat even though it’s computing for a long time.

On the top LCD panel, you can find an HD Webcam which, if used as a picture taker, the results are somewhat unsatisfactory. But indeed the average webcam on the ROG series has poor image capture quality.

You can also find the angular design on the power button which is placed at the top right corner of the workstation area. And as seen in several previews before this product was released on the market, the ROG Logo on the LCD Cover was made to light up, and according to Pemmz, the flame is cooler than Alienware’s though. And this has just been done by ASUS on the G46.

Spec

Currently, the ASUS G46VW comes in 2 specification options, especially on Pemmz.com, Pemmz Holics can all get the core i5 version with a price tag of around 13.4 million and the core i7 version as we reviewed above at a price of 14.8 million. The dGPU itself is similar to the on-board Xenom NP6350. Which means, now to go to Upgrade

The upgrade option that can be customized on the G46VW itself besides the CPU and RAM is storage. Yes, the G46VW provides a mini PCI-X slot that we can attach an m-SATA interface SSD. Therefore, the manufacturer also gives the option of a G46VW type with storage options of 500GB 5400/7200 With 128 G SSD, 750GB 5400/7200 With 128 G SSD or 1TB 5400 With 128 G SSD.

Ports & Connectivity

The presence of a mini display port on the G46VW is a distinct advantage when there are currently many LCD monitors that support this connection. Unfortunately, it doesn’t include an adapter to the standard-size Display Port.

For a 14″ notebook, especially for use in Indonesia, the absence of an ODD Drive is a fatal minus point. As is well known, the majority of computer users in Indonesia still depend on offline installers, which means that installation from CD or DVD media is still the mainstay (in addition to flash / USB media). But maybe ASUS has their own reasons why they don’t include an ODD Drive on the G46VW. Perhaps the reason for the layout design is the most reasonable, as ASUS distinguishes the MXM add on GPU slot in each of their notebook products, especially the ROG series.

Cooling

For the gaming notebook category, Pemmz itself admits that the ASUS ROG design, including the G46V, is very distinctive. And what makes it unique is the exhaust design on the back. Like its brothers G7x and G5X, the G46VW Exhaust is also very attractively designed. Similar to the spoiler cooler on sports cars. Gives the impression of “manly” even though the overall form is quite small.

The two exhaust holes channel fresh air towards the CPU and GPU respectively. If any of Pemmz Holics has seen this G46VW Disassembly video, they must have seen how ASUS managed to create an efficient layout design in terms of heat dissipation.

Upgrade Options

To the bottom, the ASUS ROG G46VW seems to carry the Unibody concept. Seen from access to very limited parts, including the battery. The difference is, on the G46VW, users can still access the RAM area. Of course, this design is often complained about because it will complicate the maintenance side, which for most gamers, is a mandatory routine to maintain component performance.

Performance

AIDA64 report
AIDA64 report

3Dmark06

We can compare the benchmark results from this ASUS ROG G46VW when compared to the last MSI CX61, the difference is 100% more. This includes the score of each element namely SM2.0, HDR/SM3.0 and CPU score.

3Dmark11

Likewise the 3DMark 11 benchmark results, reaching 100% more. Especially on the Physics Score points. If on the GT635M the score is around 3400s, on the GTX660M it touches a score of almost 7600.

PCMark7

In the PCMark7 benchmark, the HDD performance used has not been able to raise the storage score. Even less thin with storage performance on the CX61. This is what makes the total score not too significant boost.

Cache & Memory Benchmark

With the results seen in the SS above, the collaboration performance between CPU and RAM is calculated to be very good. And there should be minimal bottlenecks. FYI, the brand and RAM chip used is Hynix.

Crysis 3

Testing with the Crysis 3 game at 720p resolution, the GTX660M seems to be the most comfortable using System Spec Low. This also applies when using GeForce Experience as a determinant of proper graphics settings. NFSMW 2012

Coincidentally, when testing the G46VW, we didn’t have much opportunity to test the games that became our standard. But we promise, we will update this article soon with additional real world gaming benchmark results from the games we usually use.

One more thing we apologize to all Pemmz Holic, we have not been able to present a test battery. However, during a short test during use, the G46VW battery can last about 78 minutes (Classic Test). This is reasonable considering the G46VW battery capacity is only 6 cells and is forced to power a GTX660M.

Conclusion

This ASUS ROG G46VW has been long awaited by many ROG Fans. Most of those who look forward to this notebook are for classic reasons, tired of carrying the G55 especially the G75 during activities. With the presence of the G46VW, they can still channel gaming activities but with a much lighter weight for traveling. Unfortunately, the HD+ version of the G46VW has yet to be predicted.

The Geforce GTX660M itself with a maximum resolution of only 1366 x 768p, is predicted to rarely work full load. Because the GTX660M itself is generally intended for notebooks with a minimum resolution of HD + (1600 x 1200p). Again, this makes us even more hopeful that the HD+ version of the G46VW will soon be available on the market.

Pros

  • Lightest Gaming Notebook with GTX660M

Cons

  • No ODD Drive
  • Difficult Maintenance Access

Fair

  • 14″ LCD offers a resolution of only 1366 x 768p
